In this unit we will cover… Adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers (ABCD method) Adding and subtracting decimals Multiplying and dividing fractions Multiplying and dividing decimals Converting fractions to decimals.

Traditional method of adding and subtracting

This is an easy way to add and subtract fractions. The ABCD Method Example…

Check to see if you need to borrow. If not, add or subtract the whole numbers and then do the ABCD method to the fractions. Example…

If you are subtracting and need to borrow, change any mixed numbers to improper fractions. Next, do the ABCD method

With Subtraction or With Signed Numbers

Method 2: if you need to borrow Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions. Then add/subtract the fractions.

Which to use??? Method 1 (using as mixed #)Method 2 (converting to improper fraction) Uses smaller numbersCreates larger numbers Doesn’t work easily if you need to rename in subtraction. Works the same for every type of problem. Doesn’t work easily with signed fractions.
