The new curriculum the aim is to slim down the content of the curriculum in almost all subjects, though not in primary English, maths or science. There are changes to the content of all subjects in the national curriculum. In maths, children will be expected to learn more at an earlier age - for example to know their 12 times table by the age of nine History will take a more chronological approach than under the old curriculum In English, pupils will learn more Shakespeare and there will be more importance placed on spelling The new computing curriculum will require pupils to learn how to write code In science, there will be a shift towards hard facts and "scientific knowledge"

New vocabulary introduced - Emerging, Expected and Exceeding. On their own they don’t say much and the reason we have given these out at Parents Meetings at the end of last year is to familiarise you with the terms we intend to use. We have used these terms in line with the Objectives of the curriculum. If they are on track to achieve the Age Related Expectation then they would be expected. If they are not then they would be Emerging and if they are on track to achieve higher than the Age related Expectation then they would be Exceeding.

We have designed grids which include all the objectives for the core subjects. Maths Writing SPaG ReadingMaths WritingSPaGReading They are then ticked off according to whether the child has achieved these or understood them. A judgement is made on whether then the child is on track to meet the Age Related Expectation.

Year 3 follows on from Year 2. Your child will continue to follow the National Curriculum. There have been some changes mainly to the content that teachers have to teach. There continues to be 2 hours of PE. One outdoor and one indoor. An hour of French every other week. One hour of computing, music and RE. The rest of the timetable is taken up with English, Maths, Science, Geography, History, Art and DT. We are following a more creative curriculum and the children will be taught through topics and themes. The aim is to make learning more meaningful, interesting and fun. It creates cross curricular links which gives the children opportunities to consolidate and extend their learning and understanding.

The Year 3 topics for this year are as follows:  Term1: Tremors  Term 2: Tribal Tales  Term 3: Gods and Mortals  Term 4: Scrumdiddlyumptious  Term 5: Flow  Term 6: Urban Pioneers

 Days 3PW – Thursday and Friday 3RM – Monday and Thursday 3CC – Monday and Thursday 3LB – Thursday and Friday  What to wear?  Getting changed back into school uniform

In line with our creative curriculum and in order to give the children more practical experiences we are planning a range of trips and visits as well as inviting visitors and speakers into school. There may be a cost involved. We would ask for your support in this area as whilst contributions are voluntary, we will not be able to run trips without the financial support from our families.

 Stone Age Day £14 Thursday 26 th November 2015  Library Trip No Charge TBC  Aiming for 2 others throughout the year

Last year we made some changes to the way we set homework. It will be given fortnightly. Children will have to continue reading daily, practising times tables, division facts or number bonds, learning spelling and carrying out spelling related activities. There will also be an additional topic related activity. Use of website for extra work.

 Exceptional Words Pre-test Post test  Bi-weekly spellings Pre-test Lesson X2 Post test

 We have made some changes to our reading book bands so that the colours are in line with the National Book Band Scheme.  Some children will still be reliant on these. Some will be free readers and able to bring home a book of their choice  Focus in Year 3 for free readers is to develop a love for reading, to read a wide range of books and to develop comprehension.

 Reading every night for 20 minutes (Once a week by you)  Diaries  Changing books

 Sounding out words and using phonics  Breakdown words  Ask questions What do we know for certain? What do we think it means or suggests?  Questions based on something they have read and using the text to answer.  Paired reading

 Times tables  Number bonds  Quick skills  Calculation policy  IXL

 Some clubs will be open to the children, such as, football club, dance.  Most are run by teachers after school  Some run by outside agencies – cost involved  PE Kit

Please can we have any required medication in school (in date) this includes asthma pumps.

 We would be very grateful if you could remind the children that only fruit or a healthy snack such as a piece of cheese or a cereal bar should be eaten at break time.  DfE approved healthy snacks and drinks are sold from our snack trolley at a cost of 40p if you wish your child to purchase these.

Please use the website for updates as we will put any year group letters on here as well as important dates. Sumdog.
