BUSINESS ETHICS AND CSR IN DEUTSCHE BANK

AGENDA:

Definition of Ethics and CSR  Business ethics is the study of business situations, activities, and decisions where issues of right and wrong are addressed.  Corporate social responsibility(CSR) encompasses the economic, legal, ethical, and philanthropic expectations placed on organizations by society at a given point in time. "as per the caroll pyramid" which we have covered in class

History of Deutsche Bank 1870  Deutsche Bank was founded in Berlin to and facilitate trade relations between Germany and international markets  Deutsche Bank established a managed trust company in Mauritius  Deutsche Bank (Mauritius) Limited opened for business.

Background of Deutsche Bank  Deutsche Bank is a leading global investment bank with a strong and profitable private clients franchise. Its businesses are mutually reinforcing.  A leader in Germany and Europe, the bank is continuously growing in North America, Asia and key emerging markets.  With over 80,000 employees and about 2,000 branches in more than 70 countries, Deutsche Bank offers unparalleled financial services throughout the world.

Business Ethics in Deutsche Bank: Objectives  Code of Ethics has been formulated with the following objectives:  to provide a collective statement of standards for personal and corporate behaviour,  to ensure adherence to principles of professional behaviour,  to promote and maintain confidence in the banking profession,

 to resist and highlight improper or unprofessional conduct,  to uphold social values, laws and customs of Mauritius in the banking industry,  to instill a sense of honesty, fairness and decency in the conduct of banking business,  to harmonise the concepts of profitability and social responsibility.

Main ethics at Deutsche Bank  The Code is thus founded to achieve its objectives on the following principles: 1. INTEGRITY 2. CONFIDENTIALITY 3. LOYALTY 4. LEGALITY

CSR in the Bank  “ At Deutsche Bank, we view corporate social responsibility (CSR) as an investment in society and our own future.”  As a responsible corporate citizen, the Bank has leveraged on global intelligence and local inspiration to ensure the sustainable development of the communities in which they conduct business.

 The CSR programme – targeted at addressing critical issues of the environment, education, poverty and healthcare in Asia – is firmly anchored on the Bank’s principle, “Building Social Capital”. CSR in ASIA

Sustainability: Ensuring Viability

 As a global citizen, Deutsche Bank has a shared responsibility to combat climate change.  The Bank already plays a leading role in international emissions trading, in the financing of renewable energies and in the provision of sustainable investment products.

Corporate Volunteering: Committing Ourselves

 Deutsche Bank supports corporate volunteering in various ways; the "Initiative Plus” programme.  The Bank has also provided financial aid to the relief efforts of several natural calamities in Asia.  Deutsche Bank raises US-$ 4 million for Haiti relief efforts.

Social Investments: Creating Opportunity

 Focus on the sustainable development of the communities in which we operate.  Country level; funds are allocated to each country office to develop their own local CSR programmes.  Regional level; partnerships with various charities, foundations and NGOs across Asia to improve the lives of underprivileged youths

Art: Fostering Creativity

 Deutsche Bank has one of the world’s largest and most significant corporate art collections.  These art pieces are on display in their own exhibitions, at museums and in thier office buildings worldwide.  The Bank supports aspiring contemporary artists in various art-related projects; such as Wangechi Mutu.

Education: Enabling Talent

 Funds to education projects.  Offers scholarships with the objectives of promoting equal opportunities.  Enabling youths to explore, innovate and discover their talents.

 In Mauritius, Deutsche Bank has an active corporate social responsibility programme within the local community. CSR in Mauritius

 In 2008 Deutsche supported the project known as ‘L’Arbre de Noël 2008’.  Recent community projects in Mauritius have included active participation in both Art Mela;  And the annual Mauritius Handisports.  Deutsche Bank has also been the lead sponsor of the Deutsche Bank Mauritius 100km Cycle Tour for some years.

Allocation of sum donated  Deutsche Bank Mauritius donates Rs700,000 to social activities.  Rs to the Circle Assocation.  Rs 200,000 is shared equally among 4 charitable institutions; 1. Terre de Paix. 2. Association of Disability Service Providers (ADSP - Long Mountain Project). 3. Society for Aid to Children Inoperable in Mauritius (SACIM). 4. Friends in Hope.

Conclusion  Indeed, Deutsche Bank’s policies are not only geared towards profit making but towards assembling its staff, local and global network, to one cause: that of social development and uplifting of the needy in Mauritius.
