Solar Energy The History, Economics, and Science By Alejandro Suarez Stephanie Lundstrom

History “William Grylls Adams along with a student of his, Richard Day, discovered that when selenium was exposed to light, it produced electricity.” Calvin Fuller discovered silicon solar cells which can power small electrical devices s – Solar Cells used in space satellites. 1990s – solar energy began powering houses, railroads, etc.

The Science Solar Panels: they have 2 oppositely charged layers of semiconductor materiel composed of silicon crystals. When sunlight enters the cell, its energy knocks electrons loose in both layers. Because of the opposite charges of the layers. This electron movement creates a harvestable electrical field. 3 types of solar cells: Single-Crystal, Polycrystalline, and Thin-Film.

The Environment Process of creating the actual panels has led industries to create tons of pollutes sludge and contaminated water (industry is growing to fast to appropriately dispose of waste) Disposing used solar panels-not very environmentally friendly YET Slight contributes to global warming b/c the panels store heat Solar farms pose risk to birds Renewable Overall cleanest energy source

The Economy “The solar resource is enormous. Just 18 days of sunshine on Earth contains the same amount of energy as is stored in all of the planet's reserves of coal, oil, and natural gas.” Solar energy can cut down electrical bill drastically. It’s a long term investment. Average cost of installation: $25,000-$35,000 Many companies such as CPS offer incentives. It has a lower maintenance cost than other energy.

CPS and Solar Energy “CPS Energy offers a variety of valuable rebates and programs for making qualified, energy-saving home improvements. Many upgrades may also be eligible for tax credits. When you make these upgrades, applicable rebates are applied to your bill, which lowers your energy bill. Plus, using more efficient appliances means you save energy and money for years to come.” – CPS They are more effective in energy efficient homes. CPS basically offers to rent your roof in exchange for a cheaper electrical bill. Solar Contractor must first inspect home.
