There is an abundance of career information –Available on websites, printed guides, videos –Most people unsure how to match themselves to suitable career options –The hundreds of possibilities can be confusing Practitioners need effective and reliable tools to assist with career decision making. Good career guidance software saves practitioner time, helps achieve better client outcomes, and enables more efficient work practices. Career Information vs Guidance

Overview of Career Voyage

Suitable for all ability levels Systematically measures occupational interests Includes essential job factors Backed by extensive research Provides individual Interest Profile Creates personalised lists of job suggestions Enables exploration of pros and cons for every job Supports action planning and résumé writing Career Voyage software

Intention and ability for further education or training also important to level choice, eg –Not helpful to suggest “Doctor” to a non- academic student –Just as unhelpful to suggest “Shop Assistant” to very high academic achiever Choice of Levels

A career guidance tool must suit the academic level of the individual Choice of Levels THE INDIVIDUAL LOW CAPACITY Confused Anxious Stressed “I don’t understand the questions and struggle to give an answer” Bored Lose of concentration Frustrated “This is stupid, it won’t help me, I’m smarter than this” HIGH CAPACITY

For example: Type 2: BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES ITEMS –Level 1: Feed farm animals –Level 2: Breed birds –Level 3: Raise tropical fish –Level 4: Test people for defects in eye muscles –Level 5: Investigate the chemistry of animal & plant cells The content of Level 1 Items is very different to that at Level 5. Importantly outcomes are also quite different. Interest Items into Levels

Example: Type 2: BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES ITEMS –Level 1 & 2: Animals & Plants Interest Examples: Look after plants, feed animals –Level 3 & 4: Animals, Plants & Nature Interest Examples: Environmental management, breed animals, conduct lab testing (biological) –Level 5: Biological Sciences & Medicine Interest Examples: Diagnose / treat diseases, conduct biological / medicine research Levels & Interest Types

Having an interest in work activities holds the highest relevance to enjoying your job, but other factors also strongly influence job satisfaction. Work environment preference –Outside exposed to the elements or in a controlled environment –Working on your own, or in a team –Coping with heights, loud noise, the sight of blood etc –On call, or Business hours (9 to 5) –Working with machinery, or Office equipment Importance of Job Factors
