Collaborative OER Rush (In a nutshell)

In this event, we will: Learn about OER creation from the inside out! Learn how LibGuides can facilitate easy OER creation! Explore how librarians can create!

In this event, we will not: Create the highest-“quality” OER ever! Even make a complete work! Save the world! (we don’t have that kind of time!)

Two Quick Overviews: OER LibGuides

Open Educational Resources (OER) (In a nutshell)

Open Something freely-available plus permissions Educational that’s used for instructional purposes Resource and it’s a helpful thing.

Permissions? Image:

5 R’s of Open Retain You can keep it Reuse You can use it again Revise You can make it better Remix You can combine it with other stuff Redistribute You can give it to others for free

What could an open educational resource be? A Textbook A Website A Video A Podcast Recorded Music Archival Materials (papers, correspondence) Anything.

How do you make an OER? 1)Make a thing that you think is helpful. 2)Assign an open license to the thing. 3)Done.

LibGuides (In a nutshell)

Logging In (try it now!) URL: guide Username: Password: c0llective Click on “LibGuides” in the “My LibApps” menu.

Click “Edit Existing Guide...” …and then select “OER Rush by Mike White” to get to the LibGuide.

Click the “+” to make your new page! “Home” is the description page for the overall project. My template is on this tab for you to copy!

Click “Reuse Existing Page” to get the options below. DO check the Copy option! You want to be able to edit the page. This would be “a top level page,” meaning it has a tab. Select a page, like my template. Select “OER Rush by Mike White” to access our guide. (Really, SpringShare ? A typo?)

Layout: Change the way boxes and columns are distributed on the page. Page Settings: Reorder the boxes, delete a page, etc.

“Edit the item” button. Add/Reorder: Add or rearrange stuff! “Edit the box” button.

Important Stuff to Know When Editing Unlike Version 1, V2 boxes allow you to add any content in one box (Links, text, embedded video, etc.) LibGuides isn’t used to having a team on one user account, so… Reload the page to get all of your team’s changes! Whenever you edit, most changes will reload, but not all. Unless you are editing the same exact item (a line of text, a link), your work should not be overwritten.

Let’s Rush! (quickly)

About Design Sprints… From Google Ventures:

Overview Each team of superhero librarians will make one page (tab) on the LibGuide. This page can be about anything you would like it to be! (Groups will brainstorm.) The front page of the LibGuide has the open licensing information for the guide.

Log in! Log into LibGuides! URL: Username: Password: c0llective

Step 1: Setting the Stage Form teams of four or five! (2 minutes) Introduce yourselves! (2 minutes) Name your team! (1 minute) (If you’re stuck, name it after a favorite fictional character.)

Step 2: Unpacking Knowledge Create your space on our Google Doc (2 minutes): Round Robin Brainstorm (7 minutes total): 1. (5 minutes) Take turns around the table throwing page topic ideas (anything!) on the GDoc. Then, either: 2-1. (2 minutes) Rank your favorites each, and the highest score is the topic you have selected, or 2-2. (2 minutes) Come to a consensus decision. (This can take more time.)

Step 3: Sketch the Design (5 minutes) Name and outline the sections for your content. Are you teaching something in order? Or is it non-sequential? If you’re feeling adventurous, literally sketch what you would want to see on the page.

Step 4: Make Decisions (5 minutes) Determine who will do what in your team. In the Google Doc, type out these assignments.

Step 5: Make the Design Username: Password: c0llective In LibGuides, make your sketch a reality! (20 minutes) Have other team members review your work at the end. (5 minutes) (In an design sprint, this is usually the “prototype.”)

Step 6 is usually “test.” Instead, let’s take a look!

After today… We will keep this LibGuide going at The account will no longer be accessible, but you are free to reuse, revise, remix, retain, and redistribute the content!
