Build a Virtual Field Trip Take a few minutes to: Go to the web to find a few images to use today Copy and paste the URLs for the images into a word document Find several videos to use (Youtube, Teachertube, Discovery, etc.) Copy and paste the embed code from the videos into a word document

Today’s Objectives Basic skills to get up and running building virtual field trips with Google Earth, PowerPoint and Trackstar Basic skills to create and run a Google Earth Tour Resources to find and use already existing virtual field trip resources. Play time, play time, play time!

Final Navigating Tips: The compass and navigation tools by default are set to appear ONLY when the user mouse hovers over the tools. To change the navigation tool setting: 1)Select View in the menu bar 2)Select Show Navigation 3)Choose the desired setting

Saving Directions: Saving a Tour to other computer storage devices 1.Right click on first item in tour (from here direction or point of origin) 2.Click on Save Place As 3.Select the drive to save to, name the tour and click Save. 4.When the tour is opened it will open in Google Earth and begin playing

Layers: A huge array of various types of information, data, photos and links that can be overlaid on a Google Earth image. Layers are found at the bottom of the Sidebar on the left of the Google Earth Screen.

Paths and Lines: To utilize the lines and paths feature in Google Earth: 1.Click the Ruler Icon 2.Click the Line tab to draw a straight line segment from one point to another. To switch to Paths 1.Click the Ruler Icon 2.Click the Paths tab to draw multiple line segments to create a path

Creating a Tour: Folders To keep Google Earth Tours organized it is best to create a folder for each tour prior to creating the tour itself. To create a new folder in the My Places area of Google Earth: 1.Click Add in the Menu Bar 2.Click Folder 3.Give the folder a name 4.Add a description for the folder if desired 5.Click OK NOTE: there is no sorting feature for folders (or Placemarks) in Google Earth, to change the position of folders or Placemarks in Google Earth click and drag the folders or Placemarks to the desired position

Creating a Tour: Placemarks: To Add a Placemark: 1.Fly to desired location 2.Click on the folder to hold the Placemark 3.Click on Placemark icon in toolbar 4.Position Placemark as desired

Creating a Tour: Placemarks: To Add a Placemark: 5.Name Placemark 6.Provide Description 7.Change Style or Color of Placemark or label as desired 8.Set View or Altitude as desired, Click OK

Creating a Tour: Adding Links and Photos: Links: To add a link to a Placemark, type the URL of the desired webpage/audio/video or other web resource in the description area of the Placemark (be sure to include the portion of the URL). The URL will automatically be converted to a live link by Google Earth. Audio/Video: To embed audio/video to a Placemark, create the audio or video in a web 2.0 application that will provide an embed code (Vocaroo, Blabberize, Voki,Screencastomatic, Youtube, etc.) Copy the embed code and paste it into the description area of the Placemark.

Running and Adjusting Google Earth Tours: Running a Tour: To run a Google Earth Tour: Click on the Play Tour icon at the bottom of the Places area Use the tour navigation bar to pause, restart or stop a tour Click on any of the Placemark listings in the My Places area to jump from place to place on the tour Adjusting Google Earth Tours: To change the settings for a Google Earth tour: Click on Tools, Options, then Touring Check the Time Between Features setting Check the Wait at Features setting Be sure the Show Balloon When Waiting box is checked Fly To Speed: To adjust the Fly To Speed click on Tools, Options, Navigation

Creating a Tour: Embedding Videos and Podcasts: 1.Locate the desired video or podcast on the internet 2.Copy the embed code provided for the media 3.Paste the embed code into the Placemark description field

Creating a Tour: Adding Overlays: 1.Save the image you want to overlay on the Google Earth photo to your pc 2.Fly to the desired location 3.Position the view of Google Earth as desired 4.Click on Add – Image Overlay in the menu bar or simply click the Add Overlay Icon in the toolbar and the properties box will open. 5.Enter a title for the photo 6.Click on the blue top bar of the properties box and drag it out of the way to view the Google Earth image 7.Look for the green outline box for the overlay image (the image itself does not yet appear.)

Creating a Tour: Adding Overlays: 8.Position the green image box by using the corners or handles of the box to resize it. Use the cross hair in the center of the box to reposition it and use the circle marking in the box to rotate it. 9.When the properties box is in position, click the Browse button to navigate to the desired image. 10.Click on the name of the desired image and click Open 11. When the image overlay is in the desired position click OK NOTE: Don’t zoom in too close when working with image overlays. It’s better to click on the Add – Overlay icon while in a relatively distant view, if the view is too close the green image overlay box will be extremely difficult to work with.

Narrating Tours: Prepare computer microphone or head-set: 1.Click on Start 2.Click Control Panel 3.Click Sounds and Audio Devices 4.Click on the Voice Tab 5.Select the appropriate Record and Playback device (microphone, headset, etc.) 6.Click on Test Hardware to complete recording and playback tests and settings. To Narrate a Google Earth Tour 1.Click on the Record Tour icon 2.Click on the Microphone icon to begin recording narration 3.Navigate around the tour as desired 4.Click the red button to end narration 5.Click the tour playback or save buttons to view or save the tour

Building a Room 1.Click on Insert 2.Select Shapes 3.Insert a rectangle that takes up half the slide 4.Right click on the rectangle to choose Format Picture or Format Shape. 5.Click on Fill. Select either Solid Fill or Picture or Texture Fill. Add a color or texture to the rectangle. (This will be the floor of the room.) 6.Insert another rectangle and place it near the center of the slide. This rectangle will be the back wall of the room. 7.Use the Fill feature as listed above to set a color for the wall of the room.

Building a Room 1.Select insert Shape again 2.Select Trapezoid as the Shape 3.Draw the trapezoid shape to the side of the wall rectangle shape 4. Click on the trapezoid shape and click and drag the green circle at the top of the trapezoid to rotate the trapezoid

Building a Room 1.Resize the trapezoid to match the size of the back wall rectangle. 2. Copy the trapezoid shape, paste it into the slide and use “handle” on the side of the trapezoid shape to “swing” the trapezoid to form the opposite wall of the room.
