Creating Pre-class Content for the Flipped Classroom Deb Miller Dr. Len Roberson University of North Florida

Here's What We'll Do  Do a little work ahead of time!  Hear from someone who has already been flipping his classroom!  Work together to explore content ideas for pre-class work.  Collaborate to expand on some possibilities.

Video Walk-Throughs Dr. Thomas J. Mullen Department of Chemistry

Quick Review: Four Key Elements (Brame) 1.Expose students to content before class 2.Give incentive to prepare for class 3.Use mechanism for assessing understanding and providing feedback 4.Develop and facilitate in-class activities that focus on high-level cognitive skills

Expose students to content before class

Brainstorm Content Sources Work in pairs to identify sources of preclass content. List as many as you can!

Pre-Class Content Options  Mini-lecture (< 30 minutes)  Screencasting  Notation-based screencasting  Publisher content (MyLab, Connect, CengageNow)  Readings  Web-Based Content  Existing Materials (Ted Talks, Khan Academy, MOOCs, iTunesU, etc)

Video-based Content Options  Mini-lecture (< 30 minutes)  Screencasting  Notation-based screencasting  Existing Materials (Ted Talks, Khan Academy, MOOCs, iTunesU, etc)

Where to put the recordings  ShareStream  Private – only students enrolled in the course have access to the media by default.  Optional download  No Terms of Service  Video Anywhere (Blackboard’s YouTube plug-in)  Somewhat private – students could share the link with others

Equipment – We’ve got you covered  Microphone or headset  Webcam  Camcorder with wireless mic and tripod  Tablet Request an equipment reservation

Plan a self-made content item  Two Groups  Work to outline a content item to be used pre-class that the faculty would create.  Be ready to share your ideas.
