Student Planning Expectations Clear, systematic instructional planning is a critical element of Messiah College’s Teacher Education Program. The student teacher is to submit plans to the cooperating teacher 48 hours in advance of teaching. If the plans are not submitted in a timely manner or are not satisfactory by the time the student is to teach, the cooperating teacher may not allow the student teacher to teach.

Weekly Goal and Reflection Assignment 0 Articulate one goal in each of Danielson’s four domains: 0 Instructional Planning and Preparation 0 Classroom Environment 0 Instructional Delivery 0 Professionalism 0 These goals may be the outcomes you focus on in your career. 0 Each week you will articulate how you have worked toward the goal and the progress you’ve made. Goal/Reflection FormGoal/Reflection Form 0 Supervisors support in refining of goals. 0 Collect evidence to support your action and growth. 0 Goals can be revised if needed throughout the semester.

Both final evaluation forms will be available to the student in MCSquare after TEP Office review at the end of the semester.

18 10 STRONG Suggestions for a SUCCESSFUL Semester! Be proactive Be resourceful Seek and act on feedback Be professional Stay connected Take initiative Communicate Be solid Build relationships Maintain a growth mindset

Professionalism Dos and Don’ts 0 Dress like a professional no matter how others dress. 0 Maintain student confidentiality. 0 Know your district well. 0 Exhibit confidence and teachability. 0 Develop rapport with other professionals in the building. 0 Be resourceful. 0 Tell your cooperating teacher that you’re not sure you want to be a teacher. 0 Even consider a personal relationship with a student– EVER. 0 Use your cell phone during the school day. 0 Complain about your workload, your students, your college, your cooperating teacher…

Communication 101 Supervisor: You have some important skills to work on. Supervisor: Your content knowledge is strong, but you need more thorough plans to help students learn. Cooperating teacher: Maybe you could try incorporating some small group work? Student: You should never be a teacher. Student: Everything is fine. Don’t change a thing. Student: Nothing you do is good enough. Supervisor/Co-op says…Student hears…

Connecting with College Supervisors

Contact Information Questions about this field experience can be directed to the college supervisor and/or the Field Experience Coordinator, Mrs. Jodi McCarty

What previous student teachers found helpful 0 My teacher modeled effective strategies and held me accountable to use them as well. 0 My teacher co-taught several lessons with me. 0 He provided specific feedback, but not too much at one time. 0 She encouraged me to debrief each lesson and provided constructive feedback. 0 He gave me the responsibility and authority consistently. 0 I learned that I need to invest in the students' lives outside of the classroom.

Introducing the student teacher 0 The goal is to have the students recognize the student teacher as an adult, professional, authority figure in the classroom. This is a teacher candidate completing his/her culminating internship experience. 0 Consider how you will introduce student teacher to the following audiences: students, parents, administrators, other teachers, staff in the school. 0 What personal information will the student teacher share with these audiences and in what format?

Fear and the Power of Relationships “My own fear is matched by the fear within my students… When my students’ fears mix with mine, fear multiples geometrically– and education is paralyzed.” (Palmer, 2007, p. 37) There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. 1 John 4:18 (NIV)
