1 Fire Safety in a “Nutshell” for Lecturers Objectives of this training. At the end of this talk you will be:  Familiar with NUI Galway’s Fire Procedures  Know your legal obligations  Know what to do in advance of an emergency  Know what to do in the event of an emergency

2 Fire Safety Essentials NUI Galway The Objectives of Fire Safety are:- 1. Safety of People 2. Safety of buildings/equipment by the prevention of fire incidents

3 Prevention measures include:-  No sources of ignition (incl. No smoking).  Venue used only to capacity.  Preventive maintenance (report any issues).  Fire alarm system.  Check venue before/after the event. Fire Safety Essentials NUI Galway

4 Means of Escape – How to get out ? Be familiar with all the escape routes for the areas you lecture/teach in i.e. ALL the routes to get from the venue to the fire assembly point. Fire Safety Essentials NUI Galway

5 Your legal obligations as a Lecturer. Fire Services Act 1981 Person in Control (s. 18 (2)) “shall..to take all reasonable measures to guard against the outbreak of fire on such premises, and to ensure as far as is reasonably practicable the safety of persons on the premises in the event of an outbreak of fire”. Safety, Health & Welfare at Work Act 2005 Employees duties (s. 13)  to take reasonable care of their own and other safety;  to co-operate with the employer e.g. emergency plans, drills;  to not engage in improper conduct;  to attend and apply training/instruction;  to report defects to employer/appropriate person ASAP.

6 Legal obligations of Students/others Fire Services Act 1981 Persons on the premises (s. 18 (3)) “It shall be the duty of every person, being on premises to …..conduct himself in such a way as to ensure that as far as is reasonably practicable any person on the premises is not exposed to danger from fire as a consequence of any act or omission of his”. Safety, Health & Welfare at Work Act 2005 General Persons duties (s. 14)  to not interfere, misuse, safety features or measures;  to not put another person at risk (in connection with work activities).

7 What you need to do in advance of an emergency:- 1.Familiarise yourself with the venue(s) including the means of escape, assembly point, etc., 2.Brief students on the NUI Galway’s Fire Procedures and how they apply to the venue in use (at beginning of both terms + more frequently where required) 3.Ensure venue used to capacity 4.Do not create any obstructions to means of escape, access routes, etc. 5.Report any fire safety defects, concerns immediately.

8 What to do in an emergency (fire outbreak/continuous ringing of fire alarm). Without personal risk: 1. Instruct students to leave the venue immediately. 2. Ensure the students actually leave i.e. lecturer to leave last. 3. Assist in the evacuation of students with special needs. 4. Supervise the movement of students to the Fire Assembly point. 5. Extinguish the fire where possible - have you attended training ? 6. Ensure Fire Brigade contacted. 7. Report any issues to person in charge/Fire brigade e.g. an injured person. 8. Otherwise confirm safe evacuation of the venue. 9. You and students stay at Fire Assembly point until instructed otherwise.
