What is Running Start? “Learning by Choice” bill passed by the State Legislature in 1990, creating the Running Start option. Must be a high school junior or senior to participate. Must be enrolled in a public high school or access through a district office or a home school coop. Must place into English 101 via Compass Placement Test. Must meet all program deadlines. Local school district pays your approved allotted Running Start college credits. Students may attend our campus full or part time.

Running Start=Dual Enrollment Running Start is a “dual enrollment” program, similar to programs in 47 other states. Students earn high school and college credits simultaneously. One 5-credit college course is equal to one year of the high school level course. Available at all Washington State community colleges. Currently have approximately 2,270 students participating at BC from several school districts.

Is Running Start right for YOU? Are you excited about academic challenges? Do you consider yourself more mature than most high school students? Are you comfortable with diverse situations? Can you be assertive and ask for help on a large college campus? Have you done well in previous academic work? Are high school activities important to you?

English 101 You MUST place into English 101 on the assessment to qualify for Running Start This placement will tell us that you are currently reading at the level of a college freshman If this is not currently your skill level, you should remain in the high school for more college prep If you take the COMPASS exam at another community college they may ask you to take a writing portion too AND you must send test scores to BC testing center.

Advanced course work and academic challenge Variety in course selection (foreign languages, sciences, astronomy with a real planetarium, etc.) Flexible schedule (can take up to 18 credits) Develop independence Make connections with faculty, many of whom are happy to write letters of recommendation and recommend programs of study A new social environment

CHALLENGES of Participating in Running Start Transfer credit issues- can be a problem at private schools and universities in other states Books, fees and transportation costs-books alone can cost a few hundred dollars per quarter Fast pace and time demands of college studies Must meet high school graduation requirements (high school is one to give you BC equivalencies) A new social environment and age diversity Harm to your college and high school transcript by doing poorly FERPA- Parents do not have access to student information unless student has submitted an Information Release Form to RS office (parents do not have access to faculty at any time) - Adult content is covered in some classes Conflicting vacations Students are expected to check their BC 2-3 each week to receive important information.

KNOW THE RULE For every one hour of instruction – allow for 2 hour commitment to study/homework. If you take 10 credits 30 hour commitment EACH week If you take 15 credits 45 hour commitment EACH week * * like having full time job Balancing class-time / school work/ part time job / extra- curricular activities can be challenging.

Each quarter a new form must be submitted. Listing classes is optional. We do not need new form if you take classes other than ones listed. Keep a copy at your home before you submit to us. All signatures needed except College Running Start Advisor.

Not totally free program! High school will determine how many college credits student eligible for via enrollment form (EVF) each quarter. Running Start covers tuition for # of approved credits per EVF* Running Start covers only college level classes (100 level and above) Cost when you register for classes include: Tuition* Class fees (noted on class schedule) Student fees: fees charged to all student based on # of credits enrolled review website under tuition/fees. + each online class enrolled in $52.50 fee. ======================= Student always responsible for class and student fees. Classes will get dropped if payment not made by deadline – information give when registering online.

Running Start Academic Policy BC requires all students to achieve a 2.00 GPA (“C” average) or be placed on academic probation Approximately 8% of all Running Start students achieve below a 2.00 GPA in any given quarter If your GPA for one quarter is below a 2.00, you will be placed on academic probation. Running Start students who achieve below a 2.00 GPA for ANY TWO QUARTERS will become ineligible to participate in the program. Access the Academic Success Center – free tutoring.

Why require a “C” average? College admissions are getting more competitive every year. You will not gain admission to the college of your choice with a GPA this low. Poor grades are a sign that you are not yet ready for this environment, and should do skill-building at your high school. You do not qualify for financial aid (student loans) on future college tuition if you have an established GPA of less than We enforce this policy to protect you. If you achieve less than a “C” average, you are closing off options for future studies and financial help. Running Start is designed to OPEN doors and SAVE you money.

Class Types Class held on campus. Online (all instruction done online) Hybrid – few hours in class, balance online. What does a 5 credit class mean? – You will have 5 hours of instruction time per week. – Class could be daily for one hour or 2 days a week for 2.5 hours each etc.

Syllabus Typically includes the following components: – Course description – Course objectives – Materials needed – Course requirements: assignments, exams, projects, attendance, participation – Grading Policy – Course policy and expectations – Course calendar: homework due dates/ exam dates/ final exam – FINAL EXAM: most likely different time than scheduled class maybe different room -

Prerequisite- required as prior condition At time of registration for classes – you may enroll in any class as long as student meets the prerequisite if applicable. Not all classes will have prerequisite. example: – Math 141 Prerequisite: Placement by assessment or MATH 099 with a B- or better

Applying to a 4-year school as a Running Start student It is important to meet w/ an academic advisor your 1st quarter at BC. There can be big differences between WA schools and those out-of-state Some private colleges do not grant college credit if the courses were taken while still in high school. You always apply as a “freshman” applicant if you plan on starting at your 4 year institution the fall after high school graduation, your credits are awarded after you are admitted. You will still need to take the ACT or SAT exam.

Disability Resource Center (DRC) If you are have an IEP or a 504 plan at the high school you may be eligible for services here at the college. Accommodations can only be provided by instructor if coordinated thru DRC office. Complete and submit the Running Start Application and agreement form to our office before May 13 th by 4PM. Please follow ALL instructions and deadlines that are posted on the High School Programs Website under the Future Students Tab / Admissions. We have firm deadlines for admission to Fall Quarter Be available to attend mandatory registration up until mid-June. If you leave on extended vacation before you have a chance to sign up for registration – you will have to wait til Sept to register for classes.

New Students – Running Start Priority FALL 2016 DEADLINES Applications will be available starting February 16, 2016 NOTE: All instructions are sent to the provided on the application. You must meet all deadlines to register for PRIORITY Fall Quarter. Step 1: Submit application to B233 by 4pm May 13, 2016 or scan to (see our website) Step 2: * Complete steps 3, 4 and 5 in any order but by deadline provided. Step 3: Take COMPASS Assessment once we your Student ID number to you. Must test by 2pm, May 31, 2016 – do not delay. Create your BC account. Step 4: Complete orientation CANVAS class by 8am May 31, Available beginning April 4 th Step 5: Submit a completed Enrollment Verification form to our office no later than 5pm May 31, 2016 but not before May 1 st. IF you do not meet all of the deadlines above you will not be able to attend Fall Quarter Registration in May or June and will need to complete steps over summer and register early Sept. Step 6: Once we receive all steps above you will be ed instructions to sign up for mandatory registration held in May and June Review all steps in detail at our website All details and instructions will be sent to the you provided on your application.
