Where/When to Start When looking at colleges, check out disability services websites & visit office. Need to be accepted to Institution First Meet with ODS/DSS staff/ counselors (ask about process and what is available on campus) Apply to Disability Services, Intake appt usually in June prior to fall semester.

Documentation Needed Be prepared! Send/Submit Documentation Self-Report (Self Advocacy) Dr. Notes & Diagnosis Assessments & Evaluations IEP/504 Plan for history Each college is different, check websites, call and meet with counselor

Self-Advocacy & Awareness Students-Know your Disability, learning strengths and preferences. (Role play conversations with counselor). What accommodations do you need; why? *Parents- counselors will be speaking to the student as an adult, do not attempt to speak for them.

Pre-College Exposure to AT Awareness - Students need to know what to ask for and options. Human Resources in the K-12 System are often replaced by AT Resources in College Human Reader →Text-to-Speech Technology Human Scribe → Speech-to-Text Technology Students need to “hit the ground running.” Vocational Rehabilitation- Get a Counselor Involved before graduation! (Funding for AT Eval and Technology)

Accommodation Process Different at each institution; CONFIDENTIAL (no one knows unless you choose to disclose). Meet with counselors, get letters of accommodation (details). Accommodation Letters to Professors/ Instructors. Make a Plan ( , personal meeting, advocate).

What Accommodations are Available in College, What can I ask for? Generally Offered- ET (extended time for tests and quizzes only), use your syllabus for assignments! Time management/ task management. Quiet/Separate Space for Testing Alternative Text, Accessible Textbooks (audio, digital, braille, large print). Note taking services (person, livescribe pen, ipad apps, audio recording) Captioning & Sign Language Interpreters Adaptive Equipment & Workstations Reduced Course Load & Transportation/ Navigation Support
