Sustainability a. when the needs of the present generation are met without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs b. economics - examines how humans allocate scarce resources in the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services

Supply, Demand, and the Market a. Market Economies (engage in trade) - doesn’t account for externalities - law of demand - law of supply

b. What if we included externalities? 1. reduction in what is produced 2. include taxes, costs for pollution 3. raises the price of good/service, and lowers demand

Wealth and Productivity a. measured in terms of productivity and consumption b. GDP - gross domestic product - value of all products and services produced in a year in a given country - 4 types of spending 1. consumer spending 2. investments 3. government spending 4. exports minus imports

c. GPI 1. genuine progress indicator 2. measures of personal consumption, income distribution, levels of higher education, resource depletion, pollution, and health of a population
