World War I Section 8 Notes

1. The League of Nations was not able to achieve its goal of world peace, partly because all of the world powers did not join the organization.

World War I Section 8 Notes 2. The U.S. decided not to join the league while Germany and Russia were not invited. Germany joined in 1926 but left in 1933, and the Soviet Union finally joined in Japan left in 1933 and Italy in 1937.

World War I Section 8 Notes 3. Another problem was when countries did something viewed as wrong the League couldn’t do anything. They could declare war, but would have to use troops from member countries which the countries didn’t want to happen.

World War I Section 8 Notes 4. Lastly the League had to have a unanimous vote to take action. With so many different countries this was hardly ever going to happen.

World War I Section 8 Notes 5. The problem of Nationalism was addressed when splitting up Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, and Germany losing land. This created Poland, Yugoslavia, and many other countries.
