Maintenance Issues Tyre pressure checks Oil chain/adjust Adjust and oil bearings Replace batteries in lights Gear change oil/adjust Brake wear/adjustment Tyre wear/replacement

Product maintenance Many products have a life expectancy based on some degree of maintenance. One example of this would be many MP3 players. The batteries will need to be changed regularly and it is important that access is easy but secure.

Quality What does it mean?

Quality is determined by the intended users, clients or customers It is not the same as 'expensive' or 'high quality' Even goods with low prices can be considered quality items if they meet a market need. Definition

Not necessarily the best A quality product does not have to be the best possible or expensive It does not have to be made from the highest quality materials to the most exacting standards It DOES have to meet the customer requirements and expectations though

Quality Assurance Quality Assurance checks the systems which make the products, before, during and after manufacture. It ensures that consistency is achieved and that it meets the required standards. Factors such as equipment, materials, processes and staff training need to be constantly monitored. The customer is an important part of any QA system and may well be involved in the monitoring at various stages.

Today’s Task: Create a flowchart to instill Quality Assurance into the manufacturing of your product. All: Create a rough diagram of flow chart with at least 3 different quality checks. (D-C) Most: Begin to draw up flowchart using appropriate software (C-B) Some: Complete flow chart using appropriate software and begin to set up first test (B-A)

Quality control One part of QA A series of checks – size, strength, weight, taste etc.

Testing During Production Testing Prototypes Consumer trials Testing properties of materials Testing during production Quality Control Quality Assurance Sensory testing Testing is done at all stages of production:

Fair testing Tests need to be done under very strict guidelines to ensure every one is the same

Testing Quantitative Testing ( measurable) Qualitative Testing (opinions) Sensory Testing (opinions) Testing is done using several difference methods:

Consider “our” responsibilities Is the quality right – how do you know? Are you protected by law? Are there maintenance issues? How long is it designed to last? How do you dispose of it? Environmental impact?

Analysing and testing Fitness for purpose Ease of use Safety Reliability Value for money… Analysing and testing products is a key part of consumer protection:

Comparative testing Ensure the criteria is the same for each product Ensure you understand what the products were meant to do

Comparative testing Comparative testing is effective in determining which of several similar products are best for their intended use. The testing could vary from technical and objective, practical and subjective, or it could be a head-to-head comparison to determine ease of use, durability, or safety.
