Structural Metadata Theory
Hierarchy of Item (with page images) 1.Divisions (or Chapters) 2.Pages 3.Files (on physical media)
Structural Metadata Theory Division – Elements: 1.Types ( chapter, front cover, etc.. ) 2.Label ( name of chapter, etc.. ) – Contains child divisions and/or pages – Does not contain files* * This is not necessarily true of ALL systems, but certainly the SobekCM system.
Structural Metadata Theory Page – Specialized division – Elements: 1.Type ( always equals page ) 2.Label ( Page 2, Plate 4, Image 5, etc.. ) – Contains a collection of files which share a similar root* * This is not necessarily true of ALL systems, but certainly the SobekCM system.
Structural Metadata Theory File – Maps to a single file in a networked system – Elements: 1.Filename 2.ID 3.Checksum – Following files have similar root jpg jp tif txt 00001thm.jpg

Structural Metadata in SobekCM Resources
Metadata Architecture METS Wrapper MODS (or MARC, DC) Additional custom metadata VRA Core Darwin Core etc..
METS Metadata Encoding & Transmission Standard Standard by Library of Congress (2001) Wrapper standard that accepts any XML schemas Contains – Information about the METS file in the metsHeader – Bibliographic data in the dmdSec section(s) – Administrative information (technical, rights, etc..) in the amdSec section(s) – List of all files grouped by type in the fileSec section – Divisions/pages (i.e., table of contents) in the structMap section

Quality Control Tool
Allows user to: – Visually create structural metadata – Create and name divisions/chapters – Name the pages – Swap pages – Upload new page images – Delete page images
Quality Control Tool Online tool replacing old windows applications – dLOC Toolkit – DLC Toolbox Currently in beta release Must be logged in and have rights over that item
Quality Control Tool
Serial Hierarchy
Examples: – Amigoe di Curacao ( ) – Spizaetus ( ) – Aerial Photographs aerial – Sanborn Maps County"&f=SP – Martin Rikli Scrapbooks ( )
Serial Hierarchy Titles – Identified by BibID ( Bibliographic Identifier ) – Alternatively, “Item Group” Items – Identified by BibID : VID ( Volume Identifier ) – Alternatively, “Volume” or “Issue” – Metadata files associated at the item level
Serial Hierarchy
Titles – Identified by BibID ( Bibliographic Identifier ) – Alternatively, “Item Group” Hierarchy Items – Identified by BibID : VID ( Volume Identifier ) – Alternatively, “Volume” or “Issue” – Metadata files associated at the item level
Serial Hierarchy Titles Hierarchy – Up to five levels supported by system (3 by UI by default) – Each level has: Display text Display order Items
Serial Hierarchy Create while adding a new item to an existing title Edit for an item in the Edit Behaviors screen Edit all of the serial hierarchies for a title at the same time
