What is a research paper? 3 rd Quarter S.S. & L.A. project

YOUR WORDS, ARE YOUR POWER ; THE STORIES YOU TELL AND HOW YOU TELL THEM WILL DEFINE YOUR PLACE

A Research Paper Is…. Analytical – begins with asking a question, it is explorative and evaluates a topic OR Argumentative – takes a stance (persuasive), should be debatable NOT a repetition of facts!

A Research Paper… Takes many steps…. – Select a topic – Write a thesis statement (rough draft) – Do some basic research (take good notes!) – Create an outline – Do more quality research (evaluate your sources!) – Write a rough draft – Revise your thesis & outline – Do more research – Write a final draft

Get Results Don’t tell me that “you can’t write” Because…. I Know that YOU CAN! It just takes practice, time, effort. Don’t be afraid to fail & try again! Get Results

AN OUTLINE IS A MAP The paper is the journey

Social Studies Pick a topic such as: – Trail of Tears – Development of the cattle business – Inventions impacting the west (i.e. barbed wire) – Mormon’s influence on the settlement of Utah – Propagandas use to encourage people to move west – Etc etc etc

Things we’ll do… Write a thesis statement Learn note taking strategies Research Write an outline Evaluate sources used in research Create a glossary & a works cited page Turn in a project completed to the BEST of your ability!

HOW GREAT ARE YOU? I THINK YOU CAN BE VERY GREAT Powerful beyond measure (how great are you?) Let your own light shine!

Positive attitude: “Life is a bowl of cherries. Some cherries are rotten while others are good; its your job to throw out the rotten ones and forget about them while you enjoy eating the ones that are good! There are two kinds of people: those who choose to throw out the good cherries and wallow in all the rotten ones, and those who choose to throw out all the rotten ones and savor all the good ones.” ― C. JoyBell C.C. JoyBell C.

Thursday – Look at a variety of topics, try to pick something you’re interested in Friday – Finalize topics & do a little investigation into topic to find 3 subtopics we could write about in our papers

Research is a process… You may write notes you never use You may stumble and never find the info your looking for You may have to ask for help A LOT You may find the best info ever only to find it doesn’t work in your paper You may have to switch gears, adjust your topic to fit the info you find YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE SUPPORT

Why are we doing this??? GOAL #1- Formulate appropriate hypotheses about United States history based on a variety of historical sources and perspectives –Use many different books, websites to create an opinion about your topic GOAL #2 - access information efficiently and effectively, evaluate information critically, use information accurately and creatively –Search skills & note taking, evaluation worksheets, writing the paper

NO EXCUSES This project will take time, dedication and work: &feature=related &feature=related You do not have to do this project alone! The most inspiring thing ever said… ature=related
