 Importance of rattan to the community: Improvement of rural livelihood: additional employment and income Opportunities for establishing business enterprises from production, processing and utilization Vehicle for expanded social benefits Opportunity to contribute to biodiversity & environmental conservation Introduction

 Shrinking habitat of rattan  Supply and demand – inventory of rattan  Insufficiency or absence of policies on sustainable management, harvesting, transport, processing and marketing of rattan.  Existing policies short of appropriate provisions for harnessing community participation: tenure rights & incentives, usufruct rights, Issues and Concerns

 Existing policies short of appropriate provisions for harnessing private sector participation: investment & involvement of private sector, credit facilities, regulations relating to certification and trade, evaluation of social and environmental values establishment of relevant standards Issues and Concerns
