III. Symbiosis & Predator/Prey Interaction

A. Symbiosis:A relationship where one species of organisms lives near, in, or on another organism. 1. Mutualism: both organisms benefit (+,+) EX: Insect pollinating a flower  insect gets the nectar from the flower & flower gets fertilized

2. Commensalism:one organism benefits and the other is NOT affected (+,0) EX: Clown fish living in an anemone -“Finding Nemo”  clown fish gains shelter & protection from predators and the anemone is unaffected.

3. Parasitism:one organism benefits and the other is harmed (+,-) Parasite  Benefits Host  Harmed EX: Heartworm inside of a dog  Heartworms (parasite) feed and reproduce in heart and vessels causing restricted blood flow in the dog (host). Not a picture for the faint of heart… Get it???
