POWER Paragraphs !

Learning Goal Students will understand the parts of a power paragraph and, with help, craft a simple paragraph.

But why are we learning this?

A Key to Power Paragraphs = topic sentence/conclusion = reason/detail/fact = example/quote/explanation = transition word or phrase 1/C 2 3

What is a topic sentence? This is the 1 st POWER: it is underlined in GREEN. It is one sentence. It states the main idea, or purpose to the reader. It does NOT contain supporting details.

What is a reason/detail/fact? This is the 2 nd POWER: it is underlined in YELLOW. It’s simple—it’s a reason, detail, or fact about the topic you stated in your first sentence. Example: My dog Loki is the best dog ever. He always makes me happy.

What is an example/quote/explanation? This is the 3 rd POWER: it is underlined in PINK. Explains what your reason, detail, or fact means. For this, you can provide an example or explain the importance. You need at least ONE pink sentence, but more is preferable! Example: My dog Loki is the best dog ever. He always makes me happy. He snuggles with me every night!

What is a transition word or phrase? It is underlined in BLUE. A transitional word or phrase connects your paragraph together seamlessly so it doesn’t sound choppy! Choose a transition that matches the type of writing. For example, if I am explaining how to make a PB&J sandwich, I would use “first,” “next,” and “lastly” to indicate chronological order. Example: My dog Loki is the best dog ever. First of all, he always makes me happy. He snuggles with me every night!

What is a concluding sentence? This is the C POWER: it is underlined in GREEN. It is part of the 1 st Power because a concluding sentence is a restatement of your topic sentence (use different words). It reminds the reader of your main idea. Example: My life would not be the same without Loki in it!

Putting It All Together How many reasons/details/facts do I need for a superbly well-written paragraph?

Putting It All Together When should I use transitions?

Putting It All Together When should I use transitions? A good rule of thumb is to provide a transition before every reason/detail/fact and also before the concluding sentence.

Puppies

Puppies are fun and cute, but choosing one requires planning and responsibility, even before you bring it home. First, you need to prepare for the puppy by having the right supplies. Make sure you have a crate or area in your home set aside for the puppy to stay in when you’re not around. You’ll also a collar, a leash, some toys, and puppy food. Next, once you have the necessary supplies, you need to decide where to get the puppy. You can get puppies at a pet store or an animal shelter. Sometimes animal shelters are a better choice because they are less expensive and you are saving a puppy that doesn’t have a home. After, when you have decided where to get the puppy, you should look for one that has good qualities. The puppy should not be too timid or too aggressive. It should respond to noises and allow you to pet it. All in all, getting a puppy is an exciting experience, but it is important to make the necessary preparations.
