THE INUIT OF THE ARCTIC By: Gloria Huang and Chanelle Bentley

Subsistence The animals of the Artic were their main source of food, including sea mammals, land animals, and fish. They hunted polar bears, caribou, whales, seals, narwhal and even foxes for food and skins.

Clothing The Inuit people wore clothing made from various animal skins and furs such as caribou, dog, squirrel and seal skins because it provided the most insulation. They normally wore two layers of clothing. The inner layer of clothing was made with the fur facing in to provide warmth, and the outer layer was made with the fur facing out. Shelter During the summer, the Inuit built tents out of driftwood or poles covered with animals skins. They were mostly caribou or seals skins. They also built igloos during the winter. The igloo was a temporary, dome-shaped shelter made out of snow blocks.

Transportation They used kayaks. These were boats that were made from seal skins. An even larger boat that the Inuit's would build was the Umiaq. This was a large boat used to catch whales and walruses. Another form of transportation is the dog sled. It was a sled that was pulled by a team of dogs.

Social Organization and Government The Inuit lived in smaller family groups around four to five people with no real leader or chief. Each family lived and hunted together with six to ten other families. In Inuit culture they live as a community.

Religion The Inuit people believed that all people, animals, and forces of nature had spirits. One of the most important spirits was Sedna also known as Nuliajuk (the spirit of the sea.) She lived in the bottom of the sea and controlled the sea mammals. SednaNukshuk

Kinship There was a very stereotypical way of thought for men and women. Women: cooked the dinners, dressed the animals skins, made clothes, and raised the children. Men: Built the houses, hunted animals and fish for food and other resources.

Map The Inuit people lived in the Canadian arctic in the north. It is one of the coldest places on the planet.

About the Artic Topography: T he Artic is covered by snow and ice all year round. Much of the Artic near the ocean is very flat. The mountains are covered by glaciers. Climate: T he climate of the artic is very cold. This area had very cold and long winter and very short and cool summer. The people learned to adapt to the temperatures. Vegetation: T he vegetation in the arctic is severely limited because it is too cold. Plants that do grow are Mosses, lichens and small shrubs. These plants grow on the mountains of the Artic.
