Introduction to Civil Engineering and Surveying April 6, 2016

Agenda Introductions About christopher consultants What is civil engineering? What is surveying? Questions? Eli Goldman Engineer Project Manager Chris Fillmore, L.S. Surveyor Senior Associate, Survey Division

Established Employees In-House Services Civil Engineering Surveying Land Planning Landscape Architecture Office locations: Fairfax, Virginia Manassas, Virginia Loudoun, Virginia Lanham, Maryland Working with ideas from conception to implementation and operation.

What is Civil Engineering? Sub-disciplines include: Transportation Structural Geotechnical Construction Land development Civil engineers design, build, and maintain the foundation for our modern society – our roads and bridges, drinking water and energy systems, sea ports and airports, and the infrastructure for a cleaner environment, to name just a few.

Why Did I Chose Civil Engineering? Always curious about how things worked growing up Played with Legos as a kid Pre-engineering class in high school (submarine out of coke bottle, bridge out of wood, …) Attended Syracuse University and received a BS in Civil Engineering Interned at ccl in 2010 and started working full time after graduating in 2011.

What Do I Do as a Civil Engineer? -Infrastructure Design -Plan/Zoning Approval -Conceptual Planning / Site Analysis -Construction Services -Business Development

Clients and Projects Who do I work with: Architects Developers City/County agencies Contractors Surveyors Landscape Architects MEP Engineers Projects I am working on: Oakville Cameron park The Thornton Old Post Office Alfred Street Baptist Church

DID YOU KNOW? Land Surveying is one of the OLDEST Professions… Everyone wants Property! What is Surveying? Type of Surveys include: Boundary Surveys Topographic Surveys Construction Stakeout Subdivision and Easement Plats Specializations include: Global Information Systems (GIS) 3D Modeling and Mapping Aerial Mapping and Remote Sensing through fixed wing and UAV technologies Land Surveying is the technique, profession, and science of determining the terrestrial or three-dimensional position of points and the distances and angles between them.

Why Did I Chose Surveying? Knew at an early age the want to be in a field being able to use drawing and drafting. Enjoyed the outdoors and LOVED Mathematics! High school: Drafting classes Geometry and Trigonometry Classes (Why do I need this?!) The day after high school, started at a small Land Surveying Firm College: Attended Old Dominion University and received a BS in Civil Engineering Technology with an emphasis in Site Surveying and Design Prior to starting at christopher consultants in 2005, worked for small and large survey only and full service firms in Virginia Beach, Richmond, Northern Virginia and DC. Had my own surveying firm for a short time too Enjoy every day utilizing surveying technologies, mathematics and seeing it work on the ground through boundary surveys and construction stakeouts

-Boundary Surveys -Determine invisible lines and curves on the ground called Property Lines -Topographic Surveys -Survey the earths surface to determine the Relief of the land (Elevations and create contour maps) What Do I Do as a Surveyor?

-Construction Stakeout -Taking design information by Civil Engineers, architects and others from plans and drawings, and provide real world points of where the features are to be constructed on the subject property What Do I Do as a Surveyor?

Technologies we work with In the field: Total Stations and Robotic Total Stations GPS Units Levels 3d Scanners Boats and underwater sonar UAV Systems (Drones) In the office: AutoCAD and other Drafting Software Computation and other coordinate geometry software Review PDF and plans Google Earth and GIS software Coordination and meeting software to discuss items with the project team

Fun Stuff!

Field Exercise Scope of Work Our Client, Clark Construction has asked that we provide layout of four corners of a building for construction. They need ASAP! Our Workflow Project Surveyor will review the Plans and CAD file to determine the location of the building on the property AND the dimensions of the building Project Surveyor will compute points at the four corners of the building for use by the field crew Field crew will orientate themselves on the project and turn accurate angles and distances to each of the computed points, placing nails at each of the four corners. Field crew will determine the precise elevations of each nail. Project Surveyor will post process the stakeout work for the day and prepare a cutsheet of the four points with an exhibit showing where the points were placed

Our Project

Step 1 - Determine Coordinates, angles and distances for our stakeout

Step 2 – Layout the Work in the Field

Step 3 – Prepare Cutsheet and Exhibit
