OBSERVATIONAL LEARNING AND BANDURA. Bandura  Learning occurs within a social context.  People learn from one another through observational learning,
 Social Learning Theory assumes that we learn behavior through observational learning.  Observational learning is where people can learn by watching.

Social Learning Theory By: Shuhudha Rizwan (2007)

Albert Bandura and Walters (1960s +) Social Learning Theory Social learning theory states: “People learn from one another when they observe, imitate, and model” Albert Bandura

Children watched films of adults beating Bobo dolls Three groups: aggressive behaviour rewarded, aggressive behaviour punished and no consequences Children were taken to rooms with toys that they were told not to play with Children in the aggressive behaviour punished group expressed the fewest aggressive behaviors toward the Bobo dolls Children in the other two groups expressed an equal number of aggressive behaviors and were more aggressive than children in the aggressive behaviour punished group Bandura’s Experiment

Basic Processes of Observational Learning 1. Attention Processes (attend to and accurately perceive model’s behavior) 2. Retention Processes (remember the model’s behavior)

3. Reproduction Processes (translate symbolically coded memories of the model’s behavior into new response patterns) 4. Motivational Processes (if positive reinforcement is potentially available, perform the modeled behavior)

Principles of Observational Learning 1. The highest level of observational learning is achieved by first organizing and rehearsing the modeled behavior symbolically and then enacting it overtly. Coding modeled behavior into words, labels or images results in better retention than simply observing. 2. Individuals are more likely to adopt a modeled behavior if it results in outcomes they value. 3. Individuals are more likely to adopt a modeled behavior if the model is similar to the observer and has admired status and the behavior has functional value.
