Write Linear Equations in Point- Slope Form Section 4.3 beginning on page 242

The Point-Slope Form This form is derived from the slope formula. When you are given the slope and one point on the line, you can substitute those values in the this form. This form is especially useful when the y-intercept on the graph is not an integer value.

Write a Linear Equation Given a Point and the Slope If you are given a point and the slope this is the most efficient equation to use. Write an equation for the line that passes through the point (4,-3) and has a slope of 2. If you were asked to write the equation in slope intercept form, you could use algebra to transform the equation. Otherwise, leave it as is.

Graph the Line Given the Equation in Point-Slope Form. Extract the point and the slope and use them to graph the line. (3,-2)

Write an Equation Given Two Points We may be given two points directly, or we may have to identify two points from a graph. 1) Write an equation for the line that passes through the points (2,3) and (4,4) First calculate the slope, then choose one point to use in the formula. OR

Write an Equation Given Two Points When you are given a graph, you can calculate the slope, OR you can count it. Use the slope along with either point to write an equation. OR With the point (-1,3) With the point (1,1)
