Debrief ▪ Weekend? ▪ Hours? ▪ Service. ▪ Stories.

Today’s Objectives and Agenda Students will be able to create a personal mission statement that will illustrate their goals and beliefs by looking at sample mission statements and talking about effective/ineffective mission statements. 1.Debrief (5 minutes) 2.Every Monday Matters (10 minutes) 3.Revisit Calendar—Add Matter (5 minutes) 4.Teambuilding Exercise (20 minutes) 5.Creating a Mission Statement (Remainder of Class)

Today’s Challenge: Turn off your TV, Turn on Life ▪ 99% of all homes have at least one TV—45% have three or more. ▪ 56% of all 8-16 year olds have a TV in their bedroom. ▪ A person watches TV an average of 40 days per year. ▪ Children spend 1,023 hours a year watching TV compared to 900 hours in school. ▪ 200,000 violent acts, including 16,000 murders will be seen on TV by children before their 18 th birthday. ▪ Roughly 70% of all TV shows include sexual content, with an average of five sexual scenes per hour. ▪ On average, 38.5 minutes per week of meaningful conversation happens between a parent and their child.

Take Action Today: What are your thoughts on this information? How can you change? Do you want to change? Task: Take a look at your calendar. Think of other things you can do besides watch TV and pencil them into your calendar for the rest of the month. These last 8 days in the month are important. Take a stand. Make a difference. Then, start fresh next month!

Bank Robbery Task: Solve who is responsible for the bank robbery by working together as a group to piece your clues together. Please make sure you listen to the directions carefully so you do not break the rules. You have 25 minutes to work together to solve the crime. 1.Who robbed the bank and how? 2.What were the alibis for the other people being questioned?

Reflection: ▪ How did your way of working together change as the activity went along? ▪ Was the mystery hard or easy to figure out? If you did not figure it out, why do you think you didn’t? ▪ What was your mission from the beginning? ▪ What helped you to accomplish your mission?

“McDonald's brand mission is to be our customers' favorite place and way to eat and drink. Our worldwide operations are aligned around a global strategy called the Plan to Win, which center on an exceptional customer experience – People, Products, Place, Price and Promotion. We are committed to continuously improving our operations and enhancing our customers' experience.” “The Mountain View Learning Community will recognize and support the individual needs of all students. The community will encourage all students to pursue opportunities beyond a high school diploma. The community will empower students to explore their natural curiosity and creativity and will encourage them to become healthy, independent thinkers, lifelong learners, and productive global citizens.”

Creating a Mission Statement: First, what are your goals? List your personal goals, dreams. Second, how will you get there? What steps will you take? Third, what are your values? What will you instill in yourself to make sure you follow through with your goals? Fourth, form your ideas into a statement that reflects your ideology.

Example 1: To remember where I have been and where I will go through maintaining positive relationships with family and friends. To choose the ethical way by making a personal commitment to honesty and integrity. To find peacefulness within myself by looking inward while using my heart to guide my dreams and desires, and my mind to pursue knowledge, creating balance among all of my obligations. To content myself in my surroundings so I will always know where security lies within my life. To build a reputation of being dedicated to every goal I choose to pursue while having successes in both my personal and professional life. To enjoy every moment along this journey finding laughter, love, and happiness with each day that passes.

Homework: Typed, final mission statement by next class period.
