What is heritage? For HLF, heritage includes many different things from the past that we value and want to pass on to future generations Including……….

Historic Buildings and Sites

Industrial, Transport and Maritime

Museums, Records and Archives

Countryside and Nature

Designed Landscapes

Cultures and memories

Priority given to public and constituted not-for-profit organisations including: Community or Voluntary groups Youth clubs or organisations Charities or trusts Parish councils Local authorities Other public sector organisations Who can apply?

Our Mission Statement: ‘A lasting difference for heritage and people’ We will achieve this through our projects delivering a broad range of ‘Outcomes’. These come under 3 headings: What difference will your project make for heritage? What difference will your project make for people? What difference will your project make for communities?

What difference will your project make for heritage? With HLF investment, heritage will be: Better managed In better condition Better interpreted and explained Identified and/or recorded

This could include: Projects which conserve a building or object Projects which record people’s memories A project which is around passing on traditions A project which tells the story of your heritage through interpretation

With HLF investment, people will have: Learnt about heritage* Developed skills Changed their attitudes and/or behaviour Had an enjoyable experience Volunteered time *weighted outcome What difference will your project make for people?

This could include: Projects which encourage people to be trained in new skills Projects which have created volunteering opportunities Projects which set up a new Friends group Projects which provide information to help people learn about the heritage Projects which give people an enjoyable experience

With HLF investment: Environmental impacts will be reduced More people and a wider range of people will have engaged with heritage Organisations will be more resilient Local economies will be boosted Local areas/communities will be a better place to live, work or visit What difference will your project make for communities?

 Grants of £10,000 to £50,000, for up to 2 years  Delivered through partnerships of heritage and youth organisations  Young people should learn about heritage and gain new skills or opportunituies  Young people should lead activities and share their learning with others  Same short process as Our Heritage Young Roots Projects delivered by 11–25 year olds

How can the development team help? Provide advice and support before you apply Project Enquiry form, available on our website

You will need to remember your address and password to log back into your account! For IT support

HLF Outcomes; What is the Heritage? Why is the heritage important? Is the heritage focus clear? Is the project well planned? Will it be well managed? Is there a need and demand? Does your project represent good value for money? What is the benefit to the public? How we assess your application

HLF funds projects – make sure you define your project Get advice, complete a pre application form Read the guidance and application checklist Be clear, avoid jargon, get someone to read your application Don’t start your project before we have assessed it Provide enough detail in the form and budget Top tips

Detail required in budget For example; Cost HeadingDescription£ VAT you canno t claim back Total £ H: Equipment and Materials Recording equipment for Oral History £ Microphones £40 each Costumes for drama production; You can add in extra lines to the budget, for more detail

What can weaken an application? Try to avoid these common trip ups: Lack of heritage focus - activities which are too arts focused Heritage topic too broad Insufficient information in the application Poor evidence of need, and a lack of supporting letters Learning not addressed or no costs for learning activities Project audience too narrowly focused Project appears unmanageable Budget does not represent good value for money No pre-application advice
