Fly-Buck Designs in WEBENCH 37

Fly-Buck Topology Evolved from a synchronous buck converter by adding coupled windings to the inductor for flyback-like isolated outputs Primary side output voltage available to provide power to loads not requiring isolation from the input voltage Fewer components and smaller solution size compared to flyback designs Great for low power DC-DC applications that require isolation 38

The Isolated Buck Converter 39 Solutions can have any number of positive or negative isolated output voltages, depending on transformer specs

The Fly-Buck Converter 40 Added Components: 1)Transformer 2)Output Diode and Cap 3)Ripple Injection circuit

Fly-Buck Converter Operation When Switch 1 (Q1) is on & Switch 2 (Q2) is off: –Current in the secondary winding is 0 –Current in the primary winding is the same as the magnetizing current 41

Fly-Buck Converter Operation When Switch 2 (Q2) is on & Switch 1 (Q1) is off: –Current flowing through secondary winding is dependent on Cout1, Cout2, and the leakage inductance of the transformer –Current flowing through the primary winding is the magnetizing current PLUS the reflected current from the secondary winding. 42

Fly-Buck Current Waveforms 43

Stability using COT Control Not all control schemes are suitable Constant On-Time Control –Simple design –No compensation required –Variable Frequency Control –Type 3 Ripple Generation 44
