The car for the greener future?

The Basics Hydrogen stored in heavily monitored fuel tanks. Strips the hydrogen of its electrons which flow into the battery. Hydrogen ions combine with oxygen to create the only waste product, water vapour Figure 1 (American Honda Motor Co., Inc.[U.d]) Stored Electricity used by the electrical motor to power the vehicle.

How Green Is It?  The only emission of the vehicle is water vapour.  Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe.  Newest model of the hybrid car, Toyota Prius is 89g/km 1  Is a straight replacement for normal fossil fuelled family car  Expected to be the same price as a regular fossil fuelled car.  Honda building an infrastructure of Hydrogen refuelling stations 1 (Toyota (GB) PLC[2010])

Hydrogen In The Home  Powering homes independent of a national network of energy distribution.  Domestic power station powered using solar or wind power  Regenerative fuel supply.  Heat and steam produced in the processing of the Hydrogen used domestically for hot water or central heating systems.  “The least efficient fuel cell currently offers 40% efficiency (up to 80-90% if by-product heat and/or steam are used for other heating needs)”[ ABS Alaskan, Inc (2008)]. Figure 2 - A Honda Home Energy Station - (Bruce Whitaker u.d) 2 [ ABS Alaskan, Inc (2008)].

Hydrogen For The Building Trade  Hydrogen can come in portable canisters which are portable and easy to use.  No intoxicating emissions means it can be used indoors.  No noise which can aid communication on a site.  Can be used to attract customers because of the businesses “green credentials”.  The Hydro Pak (hydrogen generator) should provide electricity for up to 14 hours like a traditional generator, but without the noise, weight and emissions.” [Digital Trends (2008)] Figure 3 - A Hydro Pak Hydrogen Powered Generator - Digital Trends (2008) 3 [Digital Trends (2008)]

Conclusions  Hydrogen power is a straight replacement to what is currently on offer.  Only emission is water vapour.  Many uses other then the automobile.  Honda FCX Clarity a kick start to the development to the hydrogen technology.  More efficient, more environmentally friendly, more like the energy supply of today.
