Breaside Preparatory School Year Parents’ Information Meeting Monday 9 th July 2012

Transition from Year 2 to Year 3 ► The aim of this meeting is to inform you of the changes in both routine and the curriculum that occur in Year 3, in order to make the transition from the Infants to the Juniors run smoothly and not cause too much anxiety for both Parent and Child! ► Year 3 is a transition year whereby the children become used to the expectations of the Junior school. ► The emphasis in Year 3 is on growing independence and responsibility both in school and when completing homework. ► Becoming a ‘Junior’ is quite a big jump from the nature and nurture environment of the Infants. The teachers will look out for and help the children adjust to their new routines so that by the time they finish Year 3, the transition will be complete and they will be more than ready to tackle the challenges of Year 4.

Year 3 Great Expectations! ► The children will be expected to be more independent and to think ahead. ► They need to pack their own school bags each night so that they gain responsibility for their belongings and can not blame you for missing items!! ► They will be expected to read their timetables and know which lessons they will have during the day. ► The children will have the majority of their lessons in their classroom but will have to move around for lessons such as Art, ICT and Science. ► They need to be organised and to have the correct equipment ready for each lesson. ► In the form rooms your child will sit at their own desk and will be responsible for the neatness of their books inside their desk!

A Typical Day in Year 3 ► 8.20am - School opens ► 8.30am - Registration ► 8.40am - Hymn Practice ► 8.55am – English ► 9.30am - English ► 10.05am - French ► 10.40am - Break Time ► 11.00am – Maths ► 11.35am - Maths ► 12.10pm - RE

A Typical Day in Year 3 continued… 12.45pm – Lunch Time Afternoon session ► 1.50pm - Word Processing ► 2.20pm – Geography ► 2.50pm - Geography ► 3.30pm - Home Time NB Two afternoons a week are set aside for P.E.

Curriculum ► In Year 3, as in other years, the children are not streamed in any subjects. The staff will plan for differentiation in their lessons, so that extension work and consolidation is available when required. ► Your child will be taught PSHE by their form teacher and other subjects such as FRENCH ICT MUSIC DRAMA SPORT SCIENCE FRENCH ICT MUSIC DRAMA SPORT SCIENCE will be taught by specialist teachers. ► Some other members of the school staff will teach your child depending on the timetabling requirements. ► The children will continue to enjoy using many different rooms for their lessons.

Homework ► It is important to create a special time when homework becomes a priority and your child is given time and space to work quietly, without disruption. ► The children will be given homework diaries in which they will write down their homework each day. ► The diaries are expected to be checked by a parent each night and signed at the end of the week. They are also used as a communication between parent and teacher. ► The length of the homework will be approximately minutes. As the children progress through the school the length of the homework will increase, much to their dismay! ► You may want to go through the homework with your child before and after but try to let them complete it independently. If you need to help your child with their homework please inform the class teacher.

Reading ► The children are encouraged to become independent readers. Most children will be able to use the skills learned in Year 2 and will be silent readers. ► They will progress through the stage books in the library taking home a book each night to read to an adult, and they will be able to change them as required. A record of the stage books read is kept by the teacher. ► Some children will need additional support with their reading. These children will read to both the teacher and to the available teaching assistants. ► E.R.I.C. (Everyone Reading In Class!) Once a week the children will have a silent reading session with everyone reading in class at the same time.

Games and PE ► In addition to Breaside’s outdoor space, we use the facilities of Bromley Cricket Club (BCC) for games, which is a 10 minute walk from the school. ► The children will bring their PE kit to school on both games and PE days and will change at BCC. ► The children walk to the BCC in pairs and are supervised by at least 3 members of staff. ► There are 2 games lessons each week. ► The children also have the opportunity to play in matches against other schools. ► Swimming Lessons will continue to be part of the KS2 curriculum. Equipment required PLEASE would you provide your child with the following equipment, clearly named. A soft pencil case containing: HB pencils Eraser Pencil sharpener (with container) 30cm ruler Glue stick Set of colouring pencils (NO felt tips) Dictionary (and thesaurus) Blue handwriting pen (Spring Term) A4 cardboard wallet or plastic folder Also useful: ScissorsHighlighters It will be necessary to renew some of these items as the year progresses.

Labelling ► Please, please, please ► ensure that all items of clothing and equipment are adequately labelled. ► Parents are justifiably annoyed when things go missing, but it is very difficult to ensure that items are returned to their rightful owner without a name. ► Play it safe and label everything, from blazers to pencil sharpeners!

Assessment ► Each term and where appropriate the children are given tests in certain subjects to check on the progress they have made. ► In the Spring Term the children will be given the standardised NFER tests, which give an age related standardised score. The children are tested in English, Maths and are given Verbal and Non-Verbal reasoning papers. ► In the Summer Term the children are given the Optional SATS which consist of English and Maths papers. ► The children should be familiar with all these tests as they will have taken SATS in Year 2 and the NFER tests since Year 1. ► As well as the above, the children have on going teacher assessment in all areas of the curriculum.

Reports and Parent Meetings ► In line with the other year groups there will be 2 parents evenings, one in the Autumn Term and the other in the Spring Term. ► At the end of the Autumn Term the children are given Grade Cards to take home which show their levels for effort and achievement in each subject. ► In the Summer Term the children will be given a full report of their year’s achievements and where appropriate their levels. ► Of course at Breaside we very much have an open door policy. If you have any concerns about your child’s progress then please do not hesitate to make a parent/teacher meeting.

Rewards and Recognition ► We believe in recognising effort and achievement. ► The children are divided into 4 coloured houses and house points are awarded for effort and achievement amongst many other things. ► Each child collects stars and 5 stars = 1 house point. ► Every class in the school collects tokens for their behaviour, courtesy and attitude and every week the class with the most tokens will win the Token Trophy.

Question and Answer Session ► We have given you an overload of information! Now it is your turn…. Please feel free to ask any questions and we will try to answer them as best as we can! ► Thank you for attending this meeting. As always we value your support and we hope that we have given you a clearer picture of the expectations of Year 3. THANK YOU!
