Peer Review and Logical Fallacies

Warm-Up – What are the major characteristics of a successful rhetorical analysis essay? – Roots motions

Book Check and Silent Reading

Sample Essays – Read through each sample essay and award it a grade according to the AP scale

Peer Review – Read through the essays in your groups. – Award them grades according to the AP scale. – Write feedback – Praise—what was successful and why – Constructive criticism—what needs work and suggestions of how to improve it

Logical Fallacies – Incorrect logic – Arguments that don’t make sense when you think about them – Points that don’t relate to the main argument – Can be used as rhetorical devices to create appeals –

Logical Fallacies Activity 1.Split up the logical fallacies as evenly as possible between your group members. 2.Each person in the group will research their fallacies on their phones and take notes. 3.Everyone will share what they learned with their group as a whole and take notes about the fallacies that they did not research. 4.I will call on students to explain each logical fallacy and provide an example.

Nixon’s Speech (Background) – Nixon was currently running for Vice President alongside Dwight D. Eisenhower – A scandal erupted when Nixon was accused of keeping $18,000 in campaign contributions for his own personal use. – Nixon went on television to defend himself to the American public – This speech was Nixon’s response to the accusation – –

Nixon’s Speech (Activity) 1.Split up the logical fallacies among group members again so that each person gets different fallacies this time 2.Read the speech individually, taking note of those fallacies. Try to find one example of each. 3.Discuss your findings in groups. Write down each example you found as well as an explanation of how Nixon might be using that example to create an appeal.

Closure – Now that your essay has been peer-reviewed, what did you do well? What do you still need to improve?
