Humans and Their Environment SymbiosisHeat Energy Chemical vs. Physical Force, Mass, & Distance

10 pts. What information can fossilized footprints tell us about an organism?

Answer How many legs the organism had How large its feet might have been How fast it was traveling The foot structure of the organism

20 pts. What is the most likely result of building a shopping mall in a grassy meadow?

Answer The variety of plants and animals will decrease.

30 pts. What will most likely happen to giant pandas in areas where their food source (bamboo) is being cleared to make farm land?

Answer The pandas will have to compete for food because there will be less bamboo for them to eat.

40 pts. What will most likely be the effect of planting native plants in a field?

Answer It will attract wildlife who eat those plants.

Daily Double!! Humans rely on bees to pollinate roughly 80% of all our crops. The bees get food while pollinating those crops. Of which type of symbiosis is this an example? You must place your wager before you can view the question.

Answer Mutualism

10 pts. What is mutualism?

Answer Mutualism is when both organisms benefit in some way from the relationship.

20 pts. What is commensalism?

Answer Commensalism is when one organism benefits and the other organism neither benefits nor is harmed.

30 pts. Ticks, fleas, and mosquitos are all examples of which type of symbiosis with humans?

Answer Parasitism

40 pts. A bee pollinates an orchid and in the process gets pollen to take back to its hive for food. Which type of symbiosis is this and why?

Answer It is mutualism because both organisms benefit.

50 pts. Compare and contrast commensalism and parasitism.

Answer They are both relationships involving two organisms where at least one of those organisms benefits. However, in parasitism the other organism is harmed, while in commensalism the other organism is not harmed but also does not benefit from the relationship.

10 pts. Which type of heat transfer occurs when objects are in contact with each other?

Answer Conduction

20 pts. Which type of heat transfer occurs when two fluids (liquids or gases) of different temperatures mix together to cause movement?

Answer Convection

30 pts. Which type of heat transfer occurs when thermal energy travels through space?

Answer radiation

40 pts. Explain how radiation and convection are both involved with sea breezes.

Answer The sun heats the water and land through radiation. As the warm air rises over the land and cooler air blows in to fill that space, the air mixes through convection.

50 pts. Which location has the greatest rate of evaporation and why?

Answer Water boils at 100 o C. Therefore, the closer the water gets to that temperature, the more of it is evaporating.

10 pts. List two pieces of evidence that a chemical change has occurred.

Answer creation of a gas change in heat (gets hotter or colder) creation of sound or light combustion or explosion creation of a new substance

20 pts. What evidence indicates that ice melting is a physical change?

Answer Ice and liquid water are the same substance. The only difference is that heat has been added to it.

30 pts. What evidence indicates that a chemical change is occurring in the pictures below?

Answer The creation of a gas which is filling up the balloon is evidence that a chemical change is occurring.

40 pts. What evidence indicates that iron rusting is an example of a chemical change?

Answer As the iron reacts with oxygen, it creates heat and a new substance (rust).

Daily Double! Compare and contrast a chemical and physical change and provide an example of each. You must wager before seeing the question!!

Answer Both involve a change in the appearance of the substance, however in a chemical change a new substance is formed. Examples of physical changes: ice melting, water freezing, cutting paper, molding play doh, etc. Examples of chemical changes: iron rusting, copper tarnishing, wood burning, etc.

10 pts. Toy CarForceMass A20 N20 g B20 N50 g C20 N10 g Which toy car will travel the furthest distance and why?

Answer Toy car C will travel the furthest distance. If the force applied to all three cars is equal, the car with the least mass will travel the most distance.

20 pts. Which toy car will travel the least amount of distance and why? Toy CarForceMass A20 N20 g B20 N50 g C20 N10 g

Answer Toy car B will travel the least distance. If the force applied to all three cars is equal, the car with the most mass will travel the least distance.

30 pts. Which toy car will travel the least amount of distance and why? Toy CarForceMass X5 N20 g Y10 N20 g Z2 N20 g

Answer Toy car Z will travel the least distance. If the mass of all three cars is equal, the car with the least force will travel the least distance.

40 pts. Which toy car will travel the most distance and why? Toy CarForceMass X5 N20 g Y10 N20 g Z2 N20 g

Answer Toy car Y will travel the most distance. If the mass of all three cars is equal, the car with the most force will travel the most distance.

50 pts. A student needs a toy car to travel exactly 50 feet. In their first trial, the car travels 75 feet. What are two things the student could change to get the car to travel less distance?

Answer The student could either add mass to the car or use less force to push the car.
