Where East Asians Live Physical geography = uneven population distribution Settle in coastal areas or fertile areas along rivers China – 90% live on only 1/6 th of the land – Along fertile valleys and plains of the Yellow, Yangtze, and Xi rivers – Urban areas along river valleys: Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou  million in population – Western provinces are sparsely populated Taiwan – Space is limited  most of 22.6 million residents live in cities like Taipei along the coast

Where East Asians Live (continued) North and South Korea – Inhabit coastal plains that wrap around interior – Live by capitals: Seoul, South Korea and Pyongyang, North Korea Japan – Limited land area because of forested mountains – million people – 78% live in coastal urban areas like Tokaido corridor – cities crowded on main island of Honshu – Tokyo – world’s most populous urban area (26 million) – Hokkaido – rural

Culture – Japan’s Urban Lifestyle Urbanization: skyscrapers, neon signs, and crowded cities High population density and costly land = smaller homes Efficient transportation system – Shinkansen Express – bullet train – reaches speeds of over 160 miles/hour – 11 hour drive = 5 hours by train

Migration Recent migration by rural Chinese and Korean to urban areas Many drawn to SE China - Communist gov’t allows privately owned business in Hong Kong and special economic zones (labor for factories) In Korea, many fled from North  South in mid 1900s to escape communism – South Korea 48.8 million (more than double North Korea, which has lower standard of living)

Challenges of Growth Migration = urban overcrowding and shortage of farm laborers Solution: China build new agricultural town in remote areas with more social services and better quality of life Limited resources = policies like the One Child Policy
