Faculty Burnout Bharat Gopal, MD Dominique Fons, MD

Objectives Identify burnout within yourselves and your programs Define wellness Identify the “wellness toolbox” and create new tools Develop a wellness plan for yourself Collaborate with a national “tweet”work for wellness

Burnout Emotional exhaustion

Burnout Emotional Exhaustion Depersonalization

Burnout Emotional Exhaustion Depersonalization Low Personal Achievement

Burnout Assessment

Wellness

Wellness Toolbox Designate faculty Define wellness Administer Burnout assessment twice yearly Provide lectures on wellness, burnout, positive psychology and CBT counseling techniques Write a mission statement Schedule class meetings every other month

Wellness Toolkit Schedule difficult pt panels twice a year to discuss how to manage difficult situations and interactions. Develop a list of primary care providers and psychological providers who model the human side of medicine. Schedule 1 day faculty retreats for renewal. Assign “wellness partners” for faculty and residents with emotional, physical, spiritual and social goals. Develop a professionalism contract.

Wellness Toolkit Set quarterly wellness goals at advisor meetings. Make wellness an agenda item on monthly faculty and resident meetings. Develop a physician support group. Schedule “fun” events for the entire office. Involve residents in faculty meetings, committees, etc to increase sense of control. Schedule yearly retreat with team-building and self- awareness exercises.

Wellness Toolkit Empower residents and faculty to confront concerns as they see them, both in residents and faculty Encourage faculty to provide positive feedback. Take time to publicly celebrate accomplishments, even transitions from postgraduate year 1 to 2 to 3. Create an environment that does not focus on pathology.

Think-Pair-Share Things to add to the Wellness Toolkit

Wellness Plan Find a “buddy” in a close geographic location to you. Develop a plan with the following: Physical goal Emotional goal Spiritual goal Sleep goals Family goals Friend goals

SMART Goals Specific Measurable Attainable Relevant Time-bound

Example Run/walk 3 times a week Meditate daily Sing in the shower 1-2 times a month Sleep 6.5 hours a night Cuddle with my kids 3 nights a week Call/text 1 friend a week
