Newly Adopted Math TEKS: A New Generation of TEKS Copyright © Texas Education Agency All rights reserved.  The Texas College and Career Readiness Standards set a high bar for preparing all Texas students for success in the workplace.  With a targeted focus on college and career readiness for all students, TEA will continue to support students and teachers in reaching higher academic standards.

Newly Adopted Math TEKS: A New Generation of TEKS Copyright © Texas Education Agency All rights reserved. Charge from the Commissioner  New research had come out since our last standards development.  The process standards need to be consistent from grades K – 12.

Newly Adopted Math TEKS Process Standards Copyright © Texas Education Agency All rights reserved.  The intent of the State Board of Education (SBOE) is that the process standards should not be addressed nor assessed in isolation.  The instructional materials and assessment items for mathematics must integrate the process standards into the rest of the student expectations for each grade level and high school course.

Newly Adopted Math TEKS Process Standards Copyright © Texas Education Agency All rights reserved.  The Commissioner assembled a group of mathematics experts to develop a draft of the standards.  This draft was used as a starting point for the committee as they developed the TEKS.

Newly Adopted Math TEKS Process Copyright © Texas Education Agency All rights reserved.  During the first and second meetings, the committee reviewed the Commissioner’s draft and made recommendations. These meetings occurred in the spring and summer of  The committee recommendations were posted for informal feedback.  Feedback from SBOE-appointed math experts was provided as part of the TEKS Update at the September 2011 SBOE meeting.  In October of 2011, the committee met to develop final recommendations based on directions from the SBOE and informal feedback.

Newly Adopted Math TEKS Process Copyright © Texas Education Agency All rights reserved.  The math TEKS were a discussion item on the SBOE agenda at the November 2011 meeting.  A public hearing was held during the January 2012 SBOE meeting. The recommendations were approved for first reading and filing authorization.  Official public comment period opened following the January 2012 SBOE meeting.  A second public hearing was held before the April 2012 SBOE meeting. The proposed revisions to the TEKS were presented for second reading and final adoption.

Newly Adopted Math TEKS Personal Financial Literacy Copyright © Texas Education Agency All rights reserved.  A bill was passed by the 82 nd Texas Legislature in 2011 requiring the SBOE to incorporate personal financial literacy standards in math for grades K - 8.  At the January 2012 SBOE meeting, the personal financial literacy strand was added to the TEKS for grades K - 8.
