The Death Penalty : Justice For None By: Erika, Eila, Arash, Yeshema

Introduction Analysis Death Penalty: Is it biased? ● The death penalty shows that regardless of the crime committed the justice in the court isn't prevailed by the actions but determined how well your lawyer is ● Lorenzo Norwood and Herbert Joyner had committed the same crime and Joyner had managed to persuade Norwood into getting revenge. Joyner seems to be the lead perpetrator ● Norwood is mentally challenged and does not have the eligibility to make sane decisions like a normal person would, making him more vulnerable. ● Due to Norwoods lack of financial support he couldn't afford a proper lawyer making him less likely to just get off with prison time and parole. Death Penalty: Controversy. ● Executions are inhumane period. ● The executioners are not properly trained, explaining the countless botched executions that are recorded when trying to find a vein to insert the lethal injection. ● Supporters of the death penalty justify their support by concluding that executions are humane because they are painless. ● In almost all cases witnesses of the execution noted that the execution was painful and showed severe discomfort. ● American citizens are left under false presumptions on what really occurs with executions.

Introduction Analysis Death penalty: Botched Executions ●Death penalty states are having increasingly difficulty obtaining the drugs they have used to execute inmates. ●Pharmaceutical companies refuse to associate their drugs with killing people. ●The result of the lack of supply led to acquiring a more painful substance that delays inmate's death substantially. Death penalty: arbitrariness, discrimination, and mistake The death penalty is harsh and unjust. Whats even more unjust is being mistakenly convicted and sentenced to the death penalty. Unfortunately many Americans are falsely convicted of crimes and sentenced timely length for a crime they did not commit. Discrimination amongst many minorities is common.

Intended Audience American Citizens The death penalty in the United States should be abolished because it is inhumane and unjust, supporters of the death penalty think that executions are humane because they are quick and painless. Supporters of the death penalty support it because they are under the impression that it costs less than keeping a convicted criminal in jail for life. In fact it costs more. In Texas, a death penalty case costs an average of $2.3 million, about three times the cost of imprisoning a high risk offender for forty years. Convicted felons sentenced the death penalty The Death Penalty Information Center cites thirty two executions since 1982 in which the prisoner died in excruciating pain (“Botched Executions”). The death penalty is biased when it comes to American minorities. Racial minorities are likely to receive the death penalty over caucasian Americans.

Tone and Mood Formal Informative language Lots of examples used Type of language helps to support arguments Most sentences are average, reasonable length Not to short, not to long Few short sentences → blunt, help to emphasize points and arguments Use of Language Informative Facts, statistics, authority Serious Mood reflects topic Persuasive Through way of examples

Structure of the Essay Thesis - “The death penalty in the United States should be abolished because it is inhuman and unjust.” (paragraph 4) Introduction - The author integrates the introduction after the anecdote in paragraph 1. Body - The author integrates the body by giving several examples that support the death penalty. Conclusion - The author integrates the conclusion by relating it back to her original statement about the death penalty.

Transitions The author transitions between each paragraph using: facts examples or relating the point back to the previous paragraph Examples Authority Methods of development

Rhetorical Devices Anecdote “Lorenzo Norwood is mentally challenged. Severely learning disabled, he failed grade one, and his life went downhill from there… sentenced to death by lethal injection” (paragraph 1&2) Imagery “Cannon was being given lethal injection when the needle popped out of his vein” (paragraph 4) “The executioners jabbed a weeping Cannon with the needle for fifteen minutes before they finally found a suitable vein” (paragraph 5)

Allusion “Television series like Law and Order” (paragraph 14) Idiom “ The clerk flew into a rage” (paragraph 1) “Pleas from such eminent leaders as Bishop Desmond Tutu fell on deaf ears” (paragraph 11) Paradox “Some people think it's only fair to kill those who have killed others” (paragraph 7)

Current Issues Why do you think people support the death penalty? Are they merely uninformed or do they truly believe it is the best thing? Do you agree or disagree with the death penalty? Do you believe people should have the right to decide who lives and who dies? Lack of lethal injection drug in parts of United States States are passing legislation which is reinstating more primitive ways of execution Electric chair Firing squad Issues regarding the lethal injection drug call into question the rationality of the death penalty.
