ISSUES IN NURSING INFORMATICS Barbara Ann Ybañez

Clinical Information Systems - Systems that support provider order entry and decision-making are the most prominent areas for system improvement and error reduction. - Goldstein et al. propose a methodology to address unanticipated errors in guideline-based decision support systems that includes adequate training and regular system reporting as well as monitoring systems for adverse prescribing and administering practices.

Protecting Confidentiality - Increasingly, clinical and genomic data collected as part of routine patient care are being made available to the research community as a way to support evidenced-based practice, conduct epidemiological studies, or develop predictive models.

There is no single device that generates a comprehensive patient record, stores it and makes it accessible to care providers in different locations.

ISSUES IN NURSING INFORMATICS IN THE PHILIPPINES Mismatch on the international material and the local needs Lack of certification and credentialing programs in post graduate levels Scarcity of local nursing informatics expert has yet to gain acceptance and recognition in the Philippine Nursing community as a sub-specialty

Developing Standardized Terminologies in Nursing Informatics Why there is a need for standard? The need to quantify nursing for the management of resources The development of the electronic patient record The development of knowledge bases and the growth of evidence-based practice

Benefits of using standardized nursing terminologies: Better communication among nurse and other healthcare providers Increased visibility of nursing interventions Improved patient care Enhanced data collection to evaluate nursing care outcomes Greater adherence to standards of care Facilitation of assessment of nursing competency

STANDARDIZED NURSING TERMINOLOGIES: NANDA (North American Nursing Diagnosis Association) - set of nursing diagnosis helping a practitioner to codify a clinical judgment about an individual, family, or community and their response to actual or potential health problems. NIC (Nursing Intervention Classification) - the interventions that nurses do for patients, either independently or collaboratively

NOC (Nursing Outcomes Classification) - contains a listing of patient/client outcomes which are designed to evaluate the effects of nursing interventions ABC Codes (Alternative Billing Codes) CCC (Clinical Care Classifications) Omaha System
