Hope for Families – Part 3 Stop the Cycle Matthew 1:6-11

Anger and bitterness have become an epidemic in our world. Approximately 1.3 million women and 835,000 men are physically assaulted by an intimate partner annually in the United States.* *Source: Patricia Tjaden & Nancy Thoennes, U.S. Dep't of Just., NCJ

Matthew 1:6-11 David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife, Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asa, Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram, Jehoram the father of Uzziah,

Matthew 1:6-11 Uzziah the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, Amon the father of Josiah, and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.

David became king 1 Samuel 8 – 2 Samuel 5 Second king of Israel. He was a man after God’s own heart. Before he was a king he was a shepherd.

David committed a great sin 2 Samuel 11 David was a good man but he had a very big problem - he obsessed with sex.

David paid a great price 2 Samuel David’s first son was Amnon and his mother was Ahinoam. David’s second son was Kileab and his mother was Abigail. David’s third son was Absalom and his mother was Maacah.

2 Samuel 15:12 While Absalom was offering sacrifices, he also sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counselor, to come from Giloh, his hometown. And so the conspiracy gained strength, and Absalom's following kept on increasing.

2 Samuel 15:31 Now David had been told, "Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom." So David prayed, "O LORD, turn Ahithophel's counsel into foolishness."

2 Samuel 16:20-23 Absalom said to Ahithophel, "Give us your advice. What should we do?"

2 Samuel 16:20-23 Ahithophel answered, "Lie with your father's concubines whom he left to take care of the palace. Then all Israel will hear that you have made yourself a stench in your father's nostrils, and the hands of everyone with you will be strengthened."

2 Samuel 16:20-23 So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and he lay with his father's concubines in the sight of all Israel.

2 Samuel 16:20-23 Now in those days the advice Ahithophel gave was like that of one who inquires of God. That was how both David and Absalom regarded all of Ahithophel's advice.

2 Samuel 17:14; 23 Absalom and all the men of Israel said, "The advice of Hushai the Arkite is better than that of Ahithophel." For the LORD had determined to frustrate the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom.

2 Samuel 17:14; 23 When Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out for his house in his hometown. He put his house in order and then hanged himself. So he died and was buried in his father's tomb.

2 Samuel 23:34 Eliphelet son of Ahasbai the Maacathite, Eliam son of Ahithophel the Gilonite, Ahithophel has a son whose name is Eliam.

2 Samuel 11:2-3 One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, "Isn't this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite?"

Bottom Line: Anger and bitterness can kill – but Jesus came to take away the sins of His people.

A Biblical plan of action for anger management Jesus centered people forgive because it is modeled by Jesus When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left.

A Biblical plan of action for anger management Jesus centered people forgive because it is modeled by Jesus Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. – Luke 23:33-35

A Biblical plan of action for anger management Jesus centered people practice forgiveness because it is commanded For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. – Matthew 6:14-15

A Biblical plan of action for anger management Jesus centered people get rid of anger "In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, - Ephesians 4:26 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. – Ephesians 4:31

How do you get rid of it? Keep short lists Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 1 Corinthians 13:4-5

How do you get rid of it? Watch out for bitterness Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. - Hebrews 12:1

How do you get rid of it? Watch out for bitterness See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. - Hebrews 12:15

A Biblical plan of action for anger management Jesus centered people forgive because it is made possible by Jesus I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. – John 10:9-11
