OBJECTIVES Understand the following vocabulary: cell, organism, living things, nonliving things, grow, respond, reproduce, adapt, environment, energy, life cycle Differentiate between living and nonliving things List the six characteristics of living things

OPENING QUESTION What is a Living Thing?

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING THINGS All living things have these six characteristics. Anything without one of these six characteristics is nonliving. Living things are called Organisms. Non-living things do not eat/drink, move on their own, or grow. They do not have children. Living things move, grow, eat/drink, need shelter and they have children.

CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING THINGS 1. Made of Cells Organisms are made up of one or more cells. A cell is the basic unit of structure and function in living things. Cells = the “Basic Unit“ of life. 2. Use and Need Energy(Food) All organisms need and use energy to live. Energy is the ability to do work Sunlight is the source of energy for most living things. Plants use the energy in sunlight to make food, and animals get energy by eating plants or other animals that have eaten plants.

CONTINUED……. 3. Adapt to Their Environment Organisms are adapt to their environment(surroundings). All organisms have features that help them survive in their environment. For example: fish have gills 4. Respond to Their Environment Organisms react to change in their environment(surroundings). Any reaction to change is called a response. For example: A bright light may cause you to blink.

CONTINUED….. 5. Reproduce Organisms produce more organisms of their own kind. Reproduction allows organisms to continue living on the earth. 6. Grow and Develop All organisms grow and develop. Living things change, or develop, during their lifetimes. One way organisms change is by growing. Living things may also change in appearance.

Draw this chart in your notes… THINK-PAIR-SHARE Living Thing ngNonLiving Thing Using your chart, sort the following! (THINK!!!) ANT FROG STUDENT PUPPY TREE FLOWER FIRE ROCK WOOD CLOUD PAPER DIRT BALL HORSE BARK WATER HAIR FUR CAT

PARTNER SWAP!!! 1. Swap charts with a partner. 2. Check their work! Did they list anything under “living” that might not be? Did they list anything under “non-living” that might be alive? 3. Circle all the ones that you think your partner might have gotten INCORRECT.

FINAL QUESTION…… Remember the six characteristics of a Living Thing. 1.What living and nonliving things are around you? Living things………………………… Nonliving thing……………………… 2. What makes living things different from nonliving things?

CLOSING OBJECTIVES What you should have learned…….. The following vocabulary: cell, organism, living things, nonliving things, grow, respond, reproduce, adapt, environment, energy, life cycle The six characteristics of a living thing The difference between living and nonliving thing
