Enhancing your OD toolkit Leading Self Through Challenging Times for OD practitioners Building Resilience and Recovery “In The midst of winter I found within me an invincible summer Albert Camus” Stress in work is inevitable, suffering is optional This mini workshop offers practical tools, techniques and strategies which can be learned and practiced day in, day out, by just making a few very achievable simple steps. Optimus OD believe no-one joined the NHS to become weary, jaded, worn down, disappointed, angry or frustrated and yet many people, good hard working people do feel that way today. There is now irrefutable proof that stressed out leaders and managers usually end up making poor decisions and behaving in ways that at best reduce employee engagement and at worst are considered bullies and invite conflict and serious HR issues Only by looking inwards can we really have a clear view of taking personal responsibility for one’s resilience, recovery and wellbeing. This resilience workshop embodies the principles from the NHS Healthcare Leadership Model of: Self- awareness, self-confidence, self-control, self-knowledge, personal reflection, resilience and determination…but we add fun, a lightness, a revitalisation and renewal not just for the day of the workshop but one they can carry back to work for the long term and the tough days. Top line overview of this mini workshop Step by step through the session, we take a serious and light hearted examination of our reactions to events, how and why we label them as stressful and our current ways of dealing with them. Alec Grimsley will be joined by Bournemouth FC’s (premiership football club) Performance coach Tony Derbyshire to reflect on simple and practical effective ways to improve resilience and recovery through effective sleep, nutrition and hydration strategies The workshop explores 5 steps to resilience: Awareness and understanding our own stress triggers, inner conflicts, what depletes us Understanding stress and its implications for us and those we connect with Learn and apply a four stage model to reframe and dissolve stress (processes, tools and techniques) How to build long term resilience and faster recovery from tough weeks (The bigger picture) Make a resilience plan and find support We reflect upon the most up to date theories on each step and then through group work, small group exercises or personal reflection we transfer it to our personal experiences, seeing the impact of the theory on how we live and work currently. New concepts, possible solutions and ideas are then shared and either as a group or individually they are tried out and tested. Participants are encouraged to share their experiences for the groups learning but this is not compulsory. Facilitators Alec Grimsley Alec has worked with NHS professionals for 11 years and over 6,000 NHS leaders and professionals have attended his workshops which include Resilience, Vital Conversations and the breakthrough collaboration mindset change workshop called Arbinger. He has also facilitated or developed approx.14 NHS exec teams. Tony Derbyshire Tony has been developing his experience and expertise in the field of resilience and recovery for over 15 years and amongst many corporate clients he is now the performance coach for Bournemouth FC. Tony has a down to earth approach to developing resilience in leaders and their employees.
