General rules Strict procedures are applied to work on closed installations and systems, since there is a risk of harmful substances being released. You should therefore read the workplace instruction cards (WIK) or the material data safety sheets (MSDS) carefully and check whether the control measures described are in place. You should then apply the precautionary measures that are appropriate to the work you are going to carry out. Remain alert at all times when you are working. If in any doubt, always ask or suspend activities where necessary.

Hazardous substances Hazardous substances are substances which, due to their specific properties, can cause danger, harm or serious damage to humans, animals and the environment, even in small quantities. We are concerned mainly with hazardous substances that yield specific dangers, such as the way in which a substance reacts with oxygen or another chemical substance.

Gasunie uses the “work safety strategy” to reduce the effects of hazardous substances Remove or restrict the source Technical measures such as screening off, suction-removal, ventilation Organisational measures to reduce exposure Finally, individual measures such as work instructions, personal monitoring and PPE Employees are obliged to: Use all tools and equipment in the correct way Use the PPE in the correct way Cooperate with instructions and explanations Immediately notify any hazards observed to the manager/supervisor/foreman

Preparing the work Know what substances you are working with or what substances you could come in contact with Ensure adequate ventilation of the work space Check the oxygen level in the work space if necessary Make sure you know the properties and dangers of the substances concerned Discuss the risks with the supervisor/client Take the necessary precautionary measures Use all the named personal protection equipment + any extra PPE needed for specific tasks What to do if hazardous substances are released Stop work immediately and evacuate the site in the opposite direction to the wind direction Report the leak to the location supervisor or issuer of the work permit Do not venture back into the area to rescue any casualties!
