Atomic Foldable By Teresa Blackmon

You will need paper, scissors, and ruler. 1. Fold paper lengthwise, like a hotdog bun.

2.Open paper and lay flat. 3.Fold edge A to center line. Fold edge B to center line, creating two flaps. AB

4.Approximately 12 cm from the top edge, cut a flap on each side. Label the left flap, Nucleus and the right flap Electron Cloud. Nucleus Electron Cloud

5.From the bottom of the top flaps cut four flaps below Nucleus and four flaps below Electron Cloud. The cuts should be approximately every 4 cm. Nucleus Electron Cloud Label the flaps: Proton Electron Neutron Valence Electrons Isotope Group Ion Period ProtonElectron Neutron Valence Electrons IsotopeGroup Ion Period

6. Fold top edge C to bottom of Nucleus/ Electron Cloud flaps, covering both words. Write Atom on the flap. Nucleus Electron Cloud ProtonElectron Neutron Valence Electrons IsotopeGroup Ion Period C C ProtonElectron Neutron Valence Electrons Isotope Ion Group Period Atom Fold

7.Turn the paper over. At the top write Periodic Table. Under Periodic Table write Atomic Number and Atomic Mass Periodic Table Atomic Number Atomic Mass

Nucleus The nucleus of an atom is located in the center surrounded by the electron cloud. In the nucleus are the protons and neutrons. Proton Neutron Nucleus Electron Cloud The majority of the atom’s mass is located in the nucleus.

Electron Cloud The electron cloud surrounds the nucleus of the atom. Electrons are located in the cloud, BUT NEVER IN A DESIGNATED POSITION. Proton Neutron Electron Electron Cloud

Proton The sub-atomic particle, the proton, is located in the nucleus of an atom. The proton carries a positive charge. The Atomic Number of an element is the number of protons in that element. Proton Nucleus 7

Neutron The sub-atomic particle, the neutron, is located in the nucleus of an atom. The neutron carries no charge. The Atomic Mass minus the Atomic Number of an element is the number of neutrons in that element. 7 7 atomic mass -3 atomic number 4 neutrons Neutron

Electron The sub-atomic particle, the electron, is located in the electron cloud surrounding the nucleus. The electron carries a negative charge. In a neutral atom the number of protons equals the number of electrons. 7 Nucleus Electron Cloud

Valence Electron(s) Valence electron(s) are located in the electron shell/energy level farthest from the nucleus. The number of valence electron helps to determine how the element will combined with other elements to form compounds. Nucleus Valence Electron Cloud Lithium has 1 valence electron

Isotope The number of neutrons determines if the element has an isotope Proton Electron One Neutron No Neutron Isotopes of Hydrogen

Ion An ion is an electrically charged atom that has acquired an electric charge by losing or gaining one or more electrons. Lithium P = 3 N = 4 P = 3 N = 4 Electrons = 3 Electrons = 2 Ion – lost an electron. Atom has a positive charge. 3 Protons/ 2 Electrons

Group/Family On the Periodic Table the Groups/Families are the columns. Stand up for your Family! Elements in the same Group/ Family have similar characteristics.

Period On the Periodic Table the Periods are the rows. There is a Period at the end of a sentence! Elements in the same Period have the same number of Electron Shells/ Energy Levels.

Periodic Table The Periodic Table is a table of the chemical elements arranged according to their atomic numbers.

Atomic Number The Atomic Number is the number of protons in an element.

Atomic Mass The Atomic Number is the number of protons in an element. The Atomic Mass is the average mass of the protons plus neutrons in an atom.
