Important Gum Disease Prevention Tips for Kids

Gum Diseases  Gum diseases are not exclusive to adults. Even teens and kids can develop gum problems, and poor oral hygiene is to blame.  Food debris left stuck in the mouth causes bacteria to build up. Bacteria, in turn, develop into plaque. When not removed, plaque hardens which now forms tartar.  Tartar cannot be removed by mere brushing alone. You need the help of dental professional to get rid of tartar, and it should be done as soon as possible.  Otherwise, it could lead to infection of the gums surrounding the affected tooth.

Early Symptoms of Gum Diseases  While symptoms of gum diseases only show up when people have reached their 30s, teenagers and kids can develop gingivitis too.  Gingivitis is the early stage of periodontal or gum disease. One of the early symptoms of gum problems for teens is foul breath.  This can be very embarrassing for the kids, especially that this is the time when they start to socialize.  When not addressed immediately, persistent foul breath can also cause teens to lose confidence in themselves.

How to Prevent Gum Disease  Other symptoms to watch out for are swollen or red gums, heightened tooth sensitivity, and painful chewing. If your child complains of such, they may be suffering from a dental problem.  Make sure to consult your dentist right away for appropriate treatment programs.  Detecting any signs of periodontal disease in your kids ahead of time is important so they can be treated immediately.  Take your child to a dentist for a routine checkup.

Here are few more tips to taking care of your teens and kid’s oral health:

Be their Role Model  It will be hard to have your kids adopt dental hygiene habits if you don’t have any, yourself.  Take the lead in showing kids the importance of good dental hygiene habits.  Brush regularly and see your dentist regularly as well.

Check Your Kid’s Mouth Every Now and Then  Should your kids complain of any pain in their mouth, do look out for signs of possible periodontal disease.  Check if their gums are red, bright, and bleeding, and if they have foul smelling breath.

Use Fluoride Toothpaste  Kids can already start using toothpaste once they reach 12 months.  Ask your dentist for a brand they recommend for your kids.  The fluoride component in the toothpaste will help protect your child’s teeth.

Promote Tooth-Friendly Food  Encourage your kids to always drink water after every meal and reduce intake of sugary drinks.  Train them as well to lessen consuming snacks continually in between meals.  Help them appreciate tooth-friendly treats such as apple.

See Your Dentist Regularly  Visit your family dentist at least twice a year to prevent any gum diseases.  Dentists can help get rid of the bad bacteria or plaque that brushing alone could not remove which can cause gum diseases.  They also would be able share with you tips how you keep your teeth white and your gum healthy.

Good Dental Hygiene Habits  Once your kids learn to establish good dental hygiene habits, keeping their oral health in good shape will already be a lot easier as they grow up.  They’d get to prevent gum diseases, and it’s all because of your efforts in educating them about proper dental care early on.
