Consortium for ITS Training and Education (CITE)

Program Description Provides interactive online advanced transportation training and education Audience: – Current Professionals – earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) – College Students – earn a college degree from University Partners

Types of Courses Offered Independent Study – 32 courses currently available – No schedule – available 24/7 Blended Certificate Programs – Contains three core courses – three electives – Must complete in one year Full Semester – Two courses available – made up of 12 short courses – Fall and Spring schedule like a college course

Blended Courses Combines best features of both classroom and online courses – Live discussion with the instructor via conference calls – Online course materials – Specific schedule to complete the course – Interaction with other students via class problems posted on a discussion board Schedule makes completion rates significantly higher than independent study

Operations Academy Senior Management Program

Program Description 2 week “Total Immersion” course Focus on Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSM&O) Targeted towards mid to senior level managers Held every fall in Maryland (near BWI airport) Operated by the University of Maryland Center for Advanced Transportation Technology (UMD CATT)

Program Objectives Describe the impact of TSM&O on mobility and safety Manage an organization whose primary mission is TSM&O Advocate the creation of an operational focus within their agencies Demonstrate knowledge of the technical tools of TSM&O and the conditions under which they can be effectively applied

Target Audience Director/Manager of Traffic Operations Director/Manager of Transportation Planning District/Division/State Traffic Engineer Regional Director/Operations Chief Director of Maintenance/Construction Transportation Operations/Management Center Manager Manager of Traffic Engineering (state or local) Senior Transportation Planner (state, local or MPO) State Police/Public Safety

Background Concept generated in 2006 as a result of an SSOM meeting discussion on training that was needed Development funding received from the I-95 Corridor Coalition Fees a flat cost per student Only public agency participants Participants must be nominated by a federal, state or local transportation agency

Background Built on the success of the Operations Academy Program – Wanted to train more people at each agency – Conduct training regionally instead of nationally Initial Pilots conducted under SHRP2 L36 project – Regional Operations Forums for Advancing Systems Operations, Management, and Reliability FHWA offering additional ROFs to states unable to participate in initial pilots

Program Description One week regional training program Focus on Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSM&O) Targeted towards mid to senior level managers 60% of topics different than Operations Academy

ROF Goals To mainstream transportation systems management & operations (TSM&O) into the culture of the State DOT’s by transitioning the state of the art closer to the state of the practice To strengthen the TSM&O programs at the state and regional level To develop a community of practice through the development of a peer network To provide the next generation of leadership with the critical thinking skills for advancing TSM&O To provide training on the “best use” of SHRP2 Reliability products
