Common Accidents  In pairs, come up with accidents that may be typical of certain groups of people:  Children  Elderly  Work place

Children  Burns : These include sunburns and burns caused by stoves, lamps, matches, lighted cigarettes, fireplaces, wood stoves, and hot liquid from a pan, cup, bath, or hot water heater.  Head injuries: caused primarily by falls from high chairs, beds, furniture, stairs, and play equipment.  Choking: on food or foreign objects  Strangulation: caused by strings, ties, ribbons, and cords on toys, clothing, and household appliances and fixtures.  Nose injuries: caused by running into stationary objects, falling on a hard surface, or deflecting a flying toy (or the fist or foot of another child).

Children  Items stuck in a nostril, like small stones, chewable vitamins, pebbles, and peas.  Fractures/Sprains : hard falls – soft areas at the ends of bones in childhood known as growth plates  Cuts and scratches : caused by sharp fingernails, pets, sharp objects  Contusions — bruises under the skin — caused by bumps and falls.  Insect and bee stings.  Eye injuries caused by dust, sand, or other types of foreign matter in the child's eye.

Elderly As the UK population becomes older, more and more people become vulnerable and are dependent on others to meet their most basic needs The risk of accidents at home increases as age advances  Falls - The majority of accidents involving older people, both fatal and non-fatal, are falls  Disability due to slips and falls  Fractured hips, broken pelvises  Road traffic accidents  Hospitalisation : susceptible to infections such as MRSA

Work Place  Slips and falls : It has been reported that almost a third of the total of workplace accidents in the UK are the result of slips and trips. Obstructions, substances left on the floor, adverse weather and poor flooring all contribute. Commonly cause head injuries, broken bones, fractures  Manual handling – lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, carrying, moving, holding or restraining an object, animal or person. The majority of injuries are musculoskeletal disorders to backs, although strains to hands, arms and feet are common  Traffic accidents -struck by a moving vehicle, falling from, or materials falling from, a vehicle and the collapse or overturning of a vehicle  Electrical accidents – electric shock and burns  Repetitive strain injuries – computer work, repetitive movement, lifting
