Recount Writing

Let’s look at the five key areas of a recount. The ‘Organisation Toolkit’. The ‘Recounts Language Toolkit’. There are two ‘tool kits’ we need to write recounts. Typical language features Past tense. First or third person, time connectives Purpose To tell, inform, and entertain the reader what has happened in an interesting and informative way Examples Autobiography, newspaper article, history book Typical Structure Paragraphs that are organised in chronological order Audience Someone who is interested in what has happened

Recount Writing Language Features First person or third person (I/We) Past Tense Descriptive verbs, adjectives

Recount Writing Language Features Connecting/linking words (e.g. Yesterday, when, after, before, during, later on, meanwhile, following, etc.) Events in order Use of literary devices (similes, metaphors..

TYPES #1) Personal Recounts – Recounting an experience in which the author has been directly involved. #2) Factual Recounts – Retelling an event or incident such as a newspaper report, or accident report #3) Imaginative recounts – Taking on a fictitious role and relating imaginary events, e.g. a day in the life of a pencil.

Last week, our class planted some bean seeds in ice- cream cups. We watered the seeds. After that we placed the cups on the window sill in the sun. About five days later, we observed that some of the seeds were beginning to germinate. A few days later, the plants had started to sprout leaves. By the end of the week, they were about seven centimetres tall. Adapted from B Derewianka (1996)

Children's Day On Children's Day in 1999, a technology company treated more than 200 underprivileged children to a 'high-tech‘ experience. They were given training on information technology. The company wanted to provide opportunities for these children to learn more about the Internet and the latest technology. They wanted to help the less fortunate in the community. Children had an enjoyable and educational experience that day. They were exposed to the new technology for the first time and they were very interested. The company hoped to conduct many more such training sessions for these children. They fell that the skills the children had would be useful to them when they grew up.. The company was very active in caring for the less fortunate. They even put aside one day a year for their employees to do volunteer work to help the needy. They also donated money to many charitable organisations. Many people had benefited from their efforts. Many also praised the company for being so generous towards the needy Taken from:
