SHARE YOUR SLANG WORDS WITH PEOPLE AROUND YOU BY TRYING TO HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH NOTHING BUT SLANG FOR ABOUT 3 MINUTES. Slanging with My Homies

Today's Objectives and Agenda Students will be able to support and defend their position on a topic through a debate by presenting clear evidence that supports their claim. Students will be able to understand the use of colloquialism and how it affects our writing and perceptions. 1. Do Now: Slang Activity (5 minutes) 2. Slang Debate Guide (10 minutes) 3. Debate (15 minutes) 4. Dialect Review (3 minutes) 5. Dialect Activity (30 minutes) 6. Design Final Assessment (Remainder of Class)

Debate Do you think schools should ban the use of slang? Please use your debate guide to prepare your thoughts and ideas. I will be collecting this and grading it, so please make sure to fill it out using complete, well-thought out sentences. During the debate, please make sure to: ◦ Value everyone's opinions ◦ State your claim (thesis) and give good solid evidence ◦ Be respectful of the rebuttal

Let's Review What is our English language at its roots? Who is mainly responsible for the creation of language? Where do we get our more sophisticated language? What is dialect? How do you think dialects are created? What is slang? How is slang created?

Paul Laurence Dunbar From Dayton, Ohio One of the first prominent African- American writers Writes about parents' experiences with plantation life Double-Voice -Writes in both Standard English and African-American vernacular.

"When Malindy Sings"

Step 1: Translate into Formal/Standard English

Partner Discussion: Answer the three questions on the discussion guide and prepare for whole-class discussion.

"When Malindy Sings" 1.Why is the use of dialect effective in this poem? 2.What happened to the meaning of the poem when it was translated? Why not use Standard English in this poem? 3.What can you tell about the speakers/audience through the use of dialect?

"We Wear the Mask"

Step 1: Deconstruct Who wears the mask? Why do they wear the mask?

Partner Discussion Please answer the last question on the discussion guide. Be ready for whole-class discussion. 1.The same author wrote both poems, so why do you think he chose to write this poem in Standard English when he typically writes his poems in African-American vernacular?

Unit 1: Final Assessment What do you think is a substantial activity? What are some ideas? It must deal with language and its evolution, dialect, slang, etc. Ideas: ◦Researching a particular American Dialect and presenting it in a meaningful way ◦Tracing the evolution of the language here in our area and presenting it ◦Analyzing the language used in a particular piece of work (movie, book, television show, etc.)
