IDENTIFYING THE INTERESTS OF DIFFERENT GENERATIONS These are the questions used for questionnaire to find out the interests of different generations. 1- How many books do you read in a month? 2- How many hours do you spend on computer? 3- For what purpose do you use computer mostly? 4- How many hours do you watch television in a day? 5- How do you spend your weekend? 6- How do you spend your religious festivals? 7- Which of the following activities do you allocate more time to? 8- Which of the followings do you use mostly to obtain information? 9- What should intrafamilial democracy be like? 10- How do you get to know your country’s agenda?

The same questions were directed to different age groups to reach best results. These age groups are categorized as; 16-29s 30-44s 45-elders RESULTS OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE 1)How many books do you read in a month? Concerns have been expressed about the fall in reading on account of the various environmental factors and typical social trends of the era. As you can see from the graphics; The new generation seems to be more interested in reading,it canbe surprising but the level of readership decreases among elder generations.

2)How many hours do you spend on computer? The results indicated there was a significant increase in the popularity of computer among newer genarations. Interestingly, the correlation analysis revealed no statistically significant relationships between the lenght of time spent on computer and reading. As a matter of fact, having a computer at home does not imply reading less.

3) For what purposes do you use computer mostly? For each group; getting information forms the biggest pie. The question showed that notable numbers of our learners turn to the internet as basic reference tool to gather information.Additionally, youngers uses the internet for social networking, as a third choice, they use the internet for entertainment, especially for games.Adults use the internet for the office programs as a second preference.

4- How many hours do you watch television in a day? According to the answers we got from respondents, people watch more television as they get older. None of the respondents among 45s or elders responded this question “not at all”. What’s more 40 % of this age group watch TV for 4 or more hours a day. However, the results of questionnaires showed that new genarations watch less TV than their elders.

5- How do you spend your weekend? The results of the questionnaire proves the idea that for many families, the weekend is an ideal time for fun and bonding after a long week of work or school. Even 16-29s with 33,9 percentage like spending weekend with their families. As the age gets older people would like to spend more time with family so it is quite natural 80 % of 45 or elders spend weekend with family. We nearly always have the best time with our friends, yet going out with friends is not a popular weekend activity for none of the group. Cultural activities are less popular than even staying at home.

6- How do you spend your religious festivals? We Turkish have strong family bonds so we are in the habit of visiting our relatives especially during religious festivals. The results of the questionnaire prove our estimation. The questionnaire showed that two thirds of respondents visit relatives during religious festivals. Besides we don’t go on holidays during these festivals as these periods are regarded as times of coming together. Naturally, lots of people prefer spending time with family and relatives instead of going on holiday or doing anything else. Very few of our learners marked the option “nothing different”. In fact, doing the same thing for centuries means doing nothing different in a way.

7- Which of the following activities do you allocate more time to? We were expecting a higher rate of computer users in this technological age, Among youngs music turned out to be the most popular free time activity followed by computer and TV. As the age gets older the rate of music listener decreases. TV ranked as the most preferred activity among elders, followed by music and computer. Elders in our study preffered music instead of spending time on computer whilst music ranked as the most popular activity among youngs. The respondents in our study expressed less interest in cinema.

8- Which of the followings do you use mostly to obtain information? Despite the development of the internet, television is still the most information source of information especially for 45 or elders. Based on the different generations’ preference in our survey, it is practically impossible to find a family that doesn’t have a television even if one argue that for many people television is no longer the main source they hear the latest news from. Among youngs, 56 % would look up information first on the internet followed by 45 % among adults. Surprsingly, only 10 % of 45 or elders would surf internet to seek information.

9- What should intrafamilial democracy be like? 49 % of ages youngs support consideration of everybody’s opinion, 47% support a set of domestic rules and obedience to them. None of the respondents support elders’ authority. 35 % of ages 45 or elder support consideration of everybody’s opinion, 15 % support elders’ authority, 5 % support unlimited freedom and 45 % support a set of domestic rules and obedience to them

10- How do you get to know your country’s agenda? When respondents were asked which was their primary source of the country’s agenda, the study showed that TV still remains the dominating source despite the development of the Internet. The rate is especially high among 30-44s and 45 or elders when compared to 16-29s. This last question also revealed another important point, the low rate in newspaper readership. The newspaper seems to become outdated with the emergence of new media. Besides TV, the Internet has taken the concept of breaking news away from the newspaper industry.
