1 Key to The Lock of Newspaper Reading: A Magic Figure of 1900 Words Dr. H.P.S.Walia Umesh Arya

2 Rationale behind the study Applied Research Poor reading of the English newspapers by students of Media. Fear of English per se among students. Fear of pronunciation of English words. Countless number of difficult English words. Method of usage of words in real time situation.

3 Problem Perception by Researchers Participatory observation Gut feeling Feedback on blank page Personal interview

4 Objectives To identify and list down the newspaper industry based words. To create a database so as to help the journalism students improve their writing skills. To help future students in improving their vocabulary in a right direction. To identify the often-repeated words in English newspapers so as to pay special attention to them. To identify the right usage of the word in a correct sentence.

5 Test of Vocabulary Vocabulary measurement done by administering the test from the famous book “word power made easy” written by Norman Lewis The result was “BELOW AVERAGE” or “Poor” for every student.

6 Methodology Seven newspapers divided among 20 students Fix number of pages assigned to every student to read thoroughly. Difficult words (according to students) noted and listed.
