Reading Phonics – Letter and Sounds Shared Reading (whole class reading) Guided Reading (small groups) Individual reading (with parents and additional support in school for those who need it) Reading for pleasure (individual reading of books of own choice) Comprehension: literal, inference, responding to the text, language for effect and themes (text structure) How each aspect of English is taught

Writing Phonics – Letter and Sounds (Reception, Year 1/2) Shared/modelled Writing Guided Writing (in smaller groups) Individual writing Writing across the curriculum/for a real purpose Spelling taught within Phonics for younger children and discretely for older children with weekly spelling tests Word lists for Y3/4 and Year 5/6 Simple aspects of grammar taught within English lessons in both Key Stages. Discreet lessons are taught where needed too (up to 1 hour lessons) How each aspect of English is taught

How English is taught in each area of the school Reception Daily phonics English whole class work based around a story Daily activities set up in Reading and Writing areas. Adult led small group activities Opportunities for writing in all areas especially within the role play area and outdoors.

How English is taught in each area of the school Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) Phonics lessons Phonics screening test (usually in June). Year 1 pupils and those in year 2 who did not meet the required standard in year 1. Lots of writing opportunities Guided reading Individual reading Reading, writing and communication across the curriculum and for a real purpose Discrete handwriting sessions. Preparation for End of Key Stage 1 Tests for Reading and Grammar.

How English is taught in each area of the school Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6) Daily English lessons Guided reading sessions Reading comprehension Handwriting (Year 3) where needed in Year 4/5/6 – re-cap at beginning of the year Reading, writing and communication across the curriculum and for a real purpose. End of Key stage SATs tests for Reading and SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar). Writing is assessed by class teachers and moderated separately.

Cross-curricular Writing Creative Curriculum – whole school topic approach Embedding Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening skills across the curriculum to bring meaning and purpose for children to ‘apply’ their skills. The teachers have worked hard planning the new topics to ensure writing opportunities are maximised.

Assessment at end of Key Stages (Year 2/Year 6) KS1: 2 reading papers Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling An Arithmetic Paper No set dates – administered in May No writing test KS2: Mental maths has been replaced by an Arithmetic paper No Level 6 papers (stretch will be within the test) Same format as last year Outcomes will be reported as Scaled Scores (not levels – 100 being the National Standard) Government have only just published (17 th Sept) interim teacher assessments for the end of KS1 and 2.
