Design Aim: How can we solve open- ended design problems? Open-Ended Problem Solving

Do Now A cylindrical plastic tube with a diameter of 1 cm is mounted to the top of a 10,000 lb desk. A ball with a diameter of.99 cm is dropped into the tube. How would you get the ball out?

Goals Discuss what open-ended problems are and how they differ from closed- ended problems Compare mathematics, science, philosophy, and engineering Look at the various engineering disciplines and how they come together on a project

What is an open-ended problem? One that is not restrained by definite limits, restrictions, structure –Adaptable to change –Inconclusive or indefinite –Allowing for spontaneous, unstructured response Examples: Do Now, design, travel directions, everyday situations

Closed-Ended Problems One answer –May be various approaches, but all lead to the same conclusion Mostly seen in math and science classes – not as much in Robotics Ex: What is the area of this triangle?

Engineering Design Design – derived from the Latin word designare – to designate, or mark out Engineering design is the process of applying various techniques and scientific principles for the purpose of defining a device or system in detail

Hierarchy

Mathematics and Philosophy Ask open-ended questions and form fundamental principles

Science Explains nature and quantifies it using mathematics

Engineering The application of scientific and mathematical principles to practical ends such as the design, manufacture, and operation of efficient structures, machines, processes, and systems

Engineering Disciplines Mechanical – machine design, military Electrical – electric components of a device, computer hardware Civil – Bridges, Buildings Computer – software, hardware Industrial, Aerospace, Chemical

Interdisciplinary Engineers of different disciplines work together on a project What different types of engineers might work together on a car? What might each one do?

Robotics Projects In this class, we simulate engineering project experience Work in groups of three –Builder – responsible for structure of robot (mechanical engineer) –Programmer – responsible for programming the robot (computer eng) –Project Manager – oversees project, schedule (management)

Create an open ended problem Your task is to come up with your own open ended problem. Be sure to make it interesting. Sit in the back at one of the tables. Everyone in the table is your partner. Chose one question from all your partners. Every member must answer that question. Turn in your problem and answer to the group question as you leave the room today.
